Sidemarks + Fogs + Halos?

Post by Adionik » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:24 am

I have my sidemarker bulbs removed, but i'm using the power from there to power my fogs. So far i haven't blown any fuses or had any problems, but i'm wonder if i I add the halos from the MPX projectors...if it will fubar it.

I wouldn't think the fogs require that much wattage, I think the bulbs are 55w. But with the projectors...not sure.

Your fog light bulbs should be 35w or less, I believe the SRT ones are 27ish watts. You should not be using that wiring to power a bulb like a fog light. Not the brightest idea. ITs meant to power up a small wattage 194. Wire them properly before you catch something on fire.

The problem that I see with your setup now is that the power supplying your fogs are running through your mfs. Not to mention the wiring is of inappropriate gauge like lilsparkplug says. With all of the mfs problems we have just wire up a quick relay and add a fused line from your fusebox + tap.

Now if your just adding the LED lit halos from the projectors, it shouldn't be much of an extra draw due to the nature of LEDs. I believe you can find these sold seperately too.

Well I decided against the halos...the MPx projectors aren't worth the cash

I still don't know about the foglights on the sidemarkers, but they're wired up now and i'll let you know if I DIAF

What is there not to know? The gauge is too small and you are drawing too much from the Multifunction switch. You're setting yourself up to fail. Just buy a switch and an in-line fuse and wire them properly before you DIAF.

:withstupid: Please don't run your fogs off the sidemarker circuit.

It isn't a matter of if it fails, but when. And how bad. And how expensive. And how much fire damage.

You get the point...I hope.

I'll try to find some alternative to them than, i'm not crazy about running another switch but oh well...last thing I need is spending more money on this car.

And they are 55w

Just use that circuit to activate a relay for them. It'll still turn them on when you engage the parking light, but it will allow you to power them off a new circuit. Its the same concept as using the headlight circuit to activate a relay to run power to HID ballasts.

That way you aren't using a new switch, just pulling power from a better source. Relays are wonderful things

Hey I have a similar case and it also worries me. Not to thread jack, but I have wired the side marker to both the side marker and the halos and LEDS in my projectors. (At first I wired it to my signal lights but that is too much hassle and hard to have access to, so I just put them to the side markers) I think it sounds unhealthy but I only had that setup for about a month tops. So far so good.

I am a noob when it comes to wiring things though, so I wouldnt know how to wire it safely. Would I need to make a new connection somewhere?

You should be fine. LEDs use a fraction of a watt of power. The increased load on the turn signal circuit from them is minimal. You only need to worry when you start adding bulbs that draw a significant amount of power such as these fog lights.

What if I added a white colored bulb? would that use more power than the stock amber ones?

Thanks for the answer zerochad...you eliminated my worries! lol
