what is black semi gloss protective coating?

Post by Boyscoutgonebad » Fri Oct 10, 2008 3:58 pm

OK so I'm picking up a new hood hopefully tomorrow. This may be a dumb question but i don't know the answer so i guess i have to ask. I'm getting this from a guy on craigs list but he says its brand new never used, "The hood is the black semi gloss protective coating that all new parts come in" So what is that exactly? how does it compare to a finished painted car part?
I do plan on having it painted eventual but there are two reasons I'm asking

1. I'm pretty sure that it wont fit in the back seat of my car and i don't feel like borrowing a pick up and having to pay the gas for it. so my second plan is to simply bolt the new hood on and dump the old hood(its rusted out and pretty much worthless). but I don't want to run with the new hood on if that is going damage it in anyway.

2. i don't have money to have it painted right away and my car is black. so I'm considering just leaving it on like this indefinitely until i can afford to paint it. But again don't want to do that unless i know its not going to cause any problems

this is probably a no brainer question for most of you so thanks for any advice

Its called factory primer. And its a matte black looking finish. It isn't UV protected and is meant to act as a suitable substrate for a primer sealer before base and clear. Its just so the parts aren't bare metal and are resistant to surface rust. The hood WILL fit in your backseat, I've done it. It will also fit in your trunk with the backseats down.

I had a hard time trying to get it to fit,so I took the rear cushion out and it fit perfect. Just becareful make sure its not a cheap made hood, like I bought.

hood is made by API. Anyone had any experience with them? can't seem to find anything bad about them online. I'm not paying much for it so I'm not to worried about it. but i don't want to throw my money away either.

Hmmm, the one I got from certifit seemed as good as the OEM one. They weigh about the same. Besides, what do you want for $50?
