Heated Mirrors

I stumbled across this a few days ago when I was taking the airbag fuses out temporarily. In the fusebox there's a heated mirror spot with a fuse in it and I didn't think anything of it. Skip to last night and I noticed my iced over mirrors were clear. This got me curious. Was this an option or a standard feature on these cars?

WOW, this is news to me I thought our primative cars did not have that as an option...only rear window defrost...hmmmm

Yeah, that surprised the heck outta me. I got to looking last night while waiting on my brother so I rolled the window down and stuck my hand on the mirror. Yup, it was warm.

It's a 2001, not much sure other than that. It's not an R/T or anything fancy though.

oh... lol yeah. The Lincoln mom used to own had heated mirrors and I thought that was pretty neat, but on a Neon? Never would've thought they'd do something like that.

Neons used to have heated mirrors, also heated seats. I went to a auto shop to get a replacement driver's side mirror while ago, the guy asked me what year etc. and then he asked If I wanted, just the regular, power+folding or power+folding+heated.
I was surprised.

Heated mirrors, yes; heated seats, no. Canadian Chrysler Neons had heated outside mirrors as an option on LE models and standard on LX (not sure of years- I'm quoting from a 2000 brochure). I think that heated mirrors were standard on all BUX Neons. Power driver's seats were also available on BUX Neons (you can read about them in the Service Manual).
Add me to the list of people wanting heated mirrors.

Interesting...
On a somewhat related note, I was looking at the 2004 SX 2.0 FSM online the other day and there was a section describing a headlight tilt adjustment control that it suppose to be on that missing control panel between the rear defrost switch and cigarette lighter.

wow nice.. I've definitely got the power heated folding mirrors, but the seats are just the regular non-heated manual run-of-the-mill seats (which I don't mind, less things to break). I'm assuming the mirrors turn on with the rear defroster?

That option is available for European markets where that feature is required.
As far as the heated mirrors go, they were available for 2000-2002 models. The sales code the car would need to have was GS5 (left) and GSS (right).
Part # for the 2000 & 2001 is 4783567AK (Lt) and 4783566AK (Rt). MSRP is $154.00 (Lt) and $161.00 (Rt)
For 2002 only, part # 4783567AM (Lt) and 4783566AM (Rt) MSRP is $154.00 (Lt) and $111.00 (Rt)
For you 2003 and up guys, sorry

However, the difference is the connector, so I'm sure it could be retrofitted. The other issue would be if the car wasn't wired for this feature, you would have to add this circuit as well.

Why did European neons get all the nifty features?

Because Europe has deserving drivers =p and MUCH stricter safetly requirements for cars to meet minimum highway standards there.

While here in the states any moron can get a license, in Europe drivers must not only pass a written and driving test (which is more than doing parking maneuvers in a closed lot), they must also show that they have a good understanding of basic automotive maintenance (where to put the oil in, etc.) and how to change a flat.

The fact that these nifty features weren't available in the US market (although some were in Canada) helped the Neon get it's reputation as a cheap car. Thanks again to DCX for giving our cars this underserved reputation.[/sarcasm]

An even sadder fact is that even with additional safety features there are ppl that just don't use them. For example turn signals. I also see a lot of ppl driving around with the rear windows covered in frost/snow. I understand that a defroster won't remove snow in a hurry, but frost? Besides, thats what ice scapers are for.
As for stricter licensing requirements, that is a mute point also. They let repeat offenders drive with out a valid license/insurance. Until there is supporting enforcement of the laws, we can have all the rules you can imagine, but the only ones that suffer are the ppl that do abide by them.
Edit: Heated mirrors should be a requirement by law as the rear defroster is. It sucks when there is an inch of ice coating the mirror, and if you scrape it, the cheap glass they use gets scratched to hell. I just find it ironic that if there are two functional side mirrors the rear window can be totally obstucted (Ohio) but it isn't required to have defrosters on those mirrors.
Had to keep it on topic!

I'm guilty of the snow covered rear window and mirrors and I'm in ohio.. lol Now that I've found the wonder that is the heated mirrors I'll more than likely remember to turn my rear defroster on.

I just wish the van had them too, but it doesn't even have a rear defroster (astro w/cargo doors).

Mine has the fuse for the heated mirrors aswell. How can i tell if its actually equipped wit them?

I can run the last 9 digits of your VIN to see if you have those sales codes.
The way they work is when you turn on your rear defroster, the mirrors should heat up.

I'll have to dig out the title tonight and get those numbers. Probably won't be until later on tonight though.

You could probably find out quicker by turning on your defroster and seeing if your mirrors heat up.

The VIN is also on your insurance card, registration, and on the drivers side of the dash.
If someone wants me to run their VIN, please PM me for security sake. Not that much can be learned from someone not working at a dealership, but just in case.

My wifee's old 96 Caravan had not only the rear defrost and the 2 heated mirrors, but also had like 2 or 3 defroster lines/wires running underneath the front wiper blades so all 4 of those things heated up in the winter..
..upgraded to a 2006 Caravan and now it only has the heated mirrors and rear defroster... I thought the windsheild wiper lines were a good idea..they worked well...but I guess thats Chrysler cost cutting

I wish the wiring was there to put them in my car.
On a side note, I'm not positive of this, but any car I've seen with heated mirrors had the little wavy arrows on a mirror image etched into the mirror. maybe look to see if it has that.

I don't think mine had any etchings, but I'll have to check in the morning. I'll check my insurance card as well, but since there's 2 vehicles on it I'm not sure if it'll show them (no expert on that.. ).
