Headlight bolt-Where to get?

Post by Cabbs » Mon Mar 30, 2009 4:41 pm

Managed to twist the head off one of the screws holding my passenger side headlight. Anyone know where to get it? I've searched around and I couldn't find it.

There's still some thread left, so I'm gonna try to get a nut on there and JB Weld it so I can take it out and put the new one in.

So I would have to drill it out and re-tap it? Or are there any other possible ways?

Edit: Oh wow, the bolt part numbers where right there :tardbang:

Edit 2: I need to learn how to use teh brainz. How does slotting the tip of it with a dremel and using a flat-head to unscrew it sound?

Sweet. Once the bolt comes in I'll tell you how it goes.

Better off buying bolt removers for your drill. Trust me it won't be the only time you use them! LOL

the second link will be the better bet.
although in my experience with these, the bolt removers did not help, Not saying they wont work but for me it didn't help with these particular bolts.

I ended up just drilling/hacksawing them out. currently my headlight is being held on by zip ties. but i picked up a tap and die set earlier this week so over the weekend I plan on Re-taping the threads and see how that works. If that doesn't work i'll be cuting off the nut and welding a new one on.

I hacksawed my headlight bolts off. And since I didn't have any sweet tapping devices I used brute force with a screwdriver and ball-peen hammer to pop out the pieces that got stuck.

Then I just went to a slightly larger bolt (which is shorter) and it worked nicely. The bolts don't extend all the way down to the bottom of the headlight like the normal bolts but they work just the same.

Thanks for the ideas.

If the bolt remover doesn't work, I'll probably just drill it out and re-tap it for a shorter bolt. What a pain in the ass just for headlights.

Yeah these bolts were of a very poor design that's for sure.

I have to do the same. 2 of mine did this. Pain in teh ass. So any other tips on getting the other ones out would help. I was thinking of just taking a vise grips and grabbing the bottoms and trying to turn them loose.

It takes quite a bit of force to screw those bolts in, I don't see why Dodge went with such soft metal.

The bolt extractors didn't work, so we drilled the bolt out. Now we just have to re-tap the hole and we should be good.

Once I drilled through the threads I pulled the rest of the bolt from the bottom. I might finish it tomorrow.
