Help: Took Side Mouldings off and...

Hi all,

Not sure where to start this one, but I'll try here first.

I took off the side mouldings off my 01 R/T this weekend. They came off easily after sitting in the sun for a bit.

Underneith they were discusting. about 1/8" of dirt/sediment and then the sicky sh**.

I cleaned it up, got the Goo Gone and low and behold there is a grey stripe under there and a HOARD of rust bubbles that have "poped" and now show some grey primer (I'm guessing).

I need to know some good steps to fix this problem. I have waxed it with Meguires NXT 2.0 wax to see if it would blend/restore the colour back but nothing.

You cannot see it from afar, but when your close it looks horrible (IMO).

Any solutions?

Thanks in advance
Jordan

I'm pretty sure it'll fade in time. just wax it a little more and wait. mine changed a bit (besides the two doors that were repainted before i bought the car- blegh)

It will fade in time, but will still be slightly noticeable when you get close to it. What I found helpful was using a "pre-wax" or "cutting wax" that is used to get rid of minor scratches and swirl marks before doing the final wax.

If the top coat is gone, and there is actualy rust under there, you should really get the doors repainted, or you'll have brown stripes to deal with. If it was actually rusting, you prolly did yourself a favor in the long run. At least now you are aware of it, and can get it fixed.
Better now then finding the side moldings falling off one day, with the metal still attached.

try to wet sand it with 1000 sand paper and buff it off.

Well its been a few days since I did it and its starting to fade a bit.

There is no actual rust under the bubbles. I poped one when trying to sand it with 3000 grit.

I feared that I would have to re-paint them. I am hoping that they will fade in time. If its only a small area that I have to fix that would be better.

I am still looking for good ideas on how to treat it though.

Hey again,

Its been over a week and they are still there. Pretty bad on one side too.

Any suggestions to assist with the removal of the ghosts?
