wiring OEM fogs, tapping into sunroof fuse, need a relay?

Post by cgneon » Fri Sep 16, 2005 8:11 pm

just got the foglights from blackrose.. turns out i donthave the wiring already in the car.. thought i did, no big deal....

i understand watts/amps/volts equations.. and the foglights are 50watts each, giving me 3.9amps per light.... so i need a 10amp fuse for both.... and 16gauge wiring will handle a 10amp load easily..., just wanted to know if its safe to tap into like the sunroof fuse on my inside fuse box since i dont have a sunroof...

its rated at 20amps, so if i throw a 10amp fuse in there i should be fine.. but should i run it off a relay, or is the fusebox already hooked up to relays?...

also, anyone know where i can get a connector for the 886 bulb so i can run the pos and neg wires?, i know i can do it without, but would rather have the connector, would make it easier, incase i ever trade it in.....

its an option, but i wanted them to go off when the car is off, so i dont leave em on accidently and kill my battery,...

i still cant find the connectors for the bulbs though... might have to get some small female connectors and wire straight to the bulb..

you can order them from O'Reilly Auto Parts. Just make them look in the Borg Warner Catalog. Since they stock Borg Warner, depending on what time you order it, it will be in the same day or the next as long as its not a special order

dont have oreillys here, but i'll see if advance or napa can get it, thanx... also, if i cant/dont get the harness, does it matter which lead on the bulb is pos or neg?, just hooked up the bulbs to a 9volt, to make sure they were good, and they worked both ways,

i would think the extra wattage would be too much for the wiring, it looks like 18-20gauge wire.. i'll have to pull the bulbs and see what the current draw is on the parking lights.. , throwing another 10amps 100watts on that little wire might fry something..

most of the wires are the same gauge..... if anything, just increase the light fuse by 5 amps

im just gonna run seperate wiring, rather than splice into existing lighting...

increasing the fuse will only let the wires fry before it has a chance to blow the fuse..

thanx for everyones input...

Ok.. Here is the wiring harness that came with my fogs on ebay. I drive an 01 SE that did not come equipped with the fogs. I know the plugs on the left and right go to the foglights, but where exactly does the one in the middle go? Do I need to buy something else for it to be plug and play? Or do I have to splice somewhere?
Thanks.

There should be another plug down on the passenger side of the radiator or near there somewhere. Mine is actually on the lower core support towards the passenger side.

All i did was get the harness like posted and got a relay. I then tapped into the power for the parking lights to turn the relay on and tapped the power into a Ignition 12v. Then grounded the other 2 wires

This is exactly what I did to my old Daytona. This is a good, safe way of doing it since it's such a minimal amount of power just to turn the relay on and off.

anytime i put aftermarket fogs on my vehicles, i just splice into the parking lights... never had any problems burning wires or fuses. i had my rodeo for 6 years and never had an issue with the wireing.

I've seen a lotta people running around that have apperantly spliced in behind the headlights. Heh, bright fogs and brown headlights. Just don't do it that way.
