Paint question

Post by ItsRobbie » Tue Nov 03, 2009 9:39 pm

Hey, not a professional so im just curious on how you would do it.
I have a 01 neon se...its maroon. The hood got messed up with scratches and paint faded. i want to paint the hood and the trunk black before i drive it for winter. SO, how would you do it? - something easy and cheap.

i was thinking just thinking to sand a little, then spray paint it flat black. sand it littler more, spray paint black. then clear coat. kinda like rims but with the hood and trunk. Is this the right way to go?

You could always do the roller technique with Rustoleum. :-D

jeff and tam have just turned me on as well to the rustoleum paint and i will tell you what it mkes me want to do it and if i ever paint it after this im gonna try it and see how it works
i am currently gonna use spray paint for the whole car b/c at this time i dont have a spry gun
but i have sanded my whole car down with 80 grit then went back over with 120grit and then hit it wil 320grit to make it very smooth and soft
and primed it
but befor i hit it with the paint i will wet sand the primer with 320 or 400grit to make primer smooth then paint it ,wet sand with 400, paint, wet sand again until paint looks good, clear coat and hit clear coat with 1000grit wet sanding ,and clear coat again untill desirable.I plane on putting atleast 3 to5 coats of clear .
it seems like alot i know but for a cheap good clean finish its gonna take a bit
luckly you only got the hood lol
i have to do this to my whole car

well if i were you i would sand the whole hood with 400 grit getting it nice and smooth, and as long as there is no bare metal there is no need for primer. and then i would try john deere blitz black tractor paint, it comes in a aerosol spray can from any local john deere dealer, it is a very tough paint for being a solvent based rattle can and its cheap too. but rustoleum is also a option if you have some time to wet sand it out, either way when it comes time to repaint you will have to remove all of the enamel paint before refinishing with a urethane base/clear

here is a thread with the john deere paint for some good reading

I'm with Teej, I think it's way too cold for Rustoleum at this point unless the car is kept indoors. I don't think it will ever cure for you.

Crystal (LilSparkPlug) is correct. It is fall / winter season now, and it's too cold to do the roller rustoleum technique. You need warm summer weather to do that.

Or you can turn on your house's heater up really high! lol

I didn't contribute much to this thread. lol :(

What are you talking about? The one guy who pioneered the Rustoleum technique did an old honda in his garage in the dead of winter and he claims it came out just as good. I'm dissapointed in you, Tam.

Well it can be done, but drying and curing time will take extensively longer. I think. lol
