I can't really decide which I like better. White makes it look smoother, but it also seems like too much.

I voted black.

Unless you change the front end (which I didn't think you were going to do) the black flows better with the other two openings.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I have no intention of changing much of anything on the car in terms of colors. There may be a bug deflector in the future for the front, but that's it.

Keep it white, but paint the other grill sections white as well, or paint it black and leave them. It looks best with all three matching.
