removing tail lights

Got a question on outside appearance modifications. Questions about body kits, exterior lighting, just anything thats a visual mod on the "exterior" of the car. Ask those questions here.

yes orangeblast and i both know what a 13mm wrench is. the lights just didn't look so simple to take out. thats why i asked......

anyways, i don't think im doing them afterall b/c of the stupid laws. i don't want to have to deal with bullshit for my lights and then get in trouble for more modified stuff on my car, soon to come. its something i wanted to do, but not that bad. they look good, but maybe if i lived somewhere where the cops aren't such assholes, i'd do it. but if im gonna get in trouble for my damn lights, the rest of the legal shit is going to come into action too. just not worth it. thanks for all the advice...

p.s. for the record..im a girl. lol

If I didn't do stuff to my car cause it was illegal, or cause I didn't want to catch any heat from the police...there wouldn't be anything done to my car.

City cops are the worst. I remember the first time I got pulled over up here, it was cause of my tinted rear license plate cover. :? Well he was acting/walking like a bad ass then I rolled my window down and he quickly changed. Then he questioned me and I played dumb, well to make a long story short...hepulled out some tools and took my plate cover off for me and fixed my plate. While we just sat there and talked about 'those types of cars', meaning modded ones. He said he'd hate to have someone steal my car and them not be able to see my plate cause of the cover on it.

orangeblastsxt wrote:now THATS a fuckin idea!!! lmao. dude i would DIE to see someone do that! seriously tho u really think ill get busted? i see late modal camaros all the time with black tails. its like a camaro thing in norcal... hmm. what law says this is illegal?

thanks sully :D
The Uniform Act Regulating Traffic has been adopted by most, if not all, states in some way, shape, or form. Here's a relevant quote of how the tail lights section was adopted by Kansas (where I live):
8-1706. Tail lamps. (a) Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer and pole trailer, and any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two (2) tail lamps mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required in K.S.A. 8-1703, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of one thousand (1,000) feet to the rear, except that passenger cars manufactured or assembled prior to July 1, 1959, shall have at least one (1) tail lamp. On a combination of vehicles, only the tail lamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the distance specified. On vehicles equipped with more than one (1) tail lamp, the lamps shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable.
So that's why it would be illegal to have black ones - the light has got to be red and visible 1000 feet to the rear. Most, if not all, states have this law. Some might have changed it, but it's probably fundamentally the same everywhere. Whether or not it's actually enforced is a different issue and has to do more with the attitude of local cops.

technically it wouldnt be illegal then, because it would still emit a red light that can be seen 1000ft away... all your doing is tinting the clear lens black... it doesnt affect the color of the light to an extreme, it still emits red, maybe a darker red, but still red

absolutly correct, but cops are cops. my friends dad is a cop, and i asked about my exhaust (illegal lol) and the black tails. he said theyre illegal, period. any modified exhaust is illegal in CA. if you dont have a carb# on CAI= illegal (ebay), and a shoot load of other stuff too. pcv breathers are illegal too, no matter what. pretty much everything is illegal. fun fun fun.

orangeblastsxt will be ok up in Crackaville where he lives. He'd be ok out in Tracy by me too.If he starts rollin' around in SF, SJ, Oakland and screwing around, he's toast with tinted lamps. If he's racing and teh CHP catches him, they'll CSI the crap out of his car. (Even measure ride height if they are bein' complete peckers.)
I say tint em.' You'll get bored with it before you get caught. :)

You should spend the 17 bucks on a haynes manual for your car. It would save you a lot of time and headaches

No, so you can come try to put me in a real ambulance.

Or I can come to you, and you can try on your home tuff, since I know that sorta thing makes a difference to people who need 'backup' from their friends.

Duh.
