Cutting Front Bumper

Post by Null462 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 4:03 pm

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place bc it kinda fits Exterior and Forced Induction..

Anyway, working on turboing my 2000 Neon with a 01-02 front bumper cover. Looking for some guidance on how to cut the rear side of my bumper cover to fit a CxRacing BFMIC..

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

01-02 bumpers are different, unless it's an R/T style. Just FYI. The image in your sig looks like a 2002 base.

Anyway.

It's going to be a bit of trial and error. Fit, mark, cut, repeat. Use something like a Dremel to make the cut. That's what I used on my old SRT bumper. It was time consuming and tricky, because the plastic wants to melt instead of cutting cleanly. So go slow.
02 base -> 05 SRT ACR -> 96 sedan -> 99 R/T coupe -> 02 R/T -> 03 SRT

I tried using a cordless dremel with a tip for cutting plastic and the battery is most likely shot.. drained a full battery in like 2minutes lol

Use a coping saw with a fine tooth blade. Shouldn't have a problem cutting the plastic and shouldn't melt either.

Using a plug in Dremel with a metal blade worked much better than the cut off wheels I started with.

I used a dremel with a cut off wheel to do mine. I'd mount it gently, see where it contacted, and clearance it a bit, remount, clearance etc.

I also opened up the openings to get more air into the IC

The wrong cutting wheel will melt the plastic instead of just cutting it cleanly. I like the metal wood saw wheel on my CORDED dremel (dying batteries at critical moments sucks azz).
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

True statement on the batteries dying.. I just happened to have the battery dremel so I attempted that and it sucked..

Oh, and cut a LITTLE bit off at a time.... so you don't OVERcut :P

Take pics, show us the progress. I have a 2000 front bumper so I'm curious to see how this turns out.
