new to neons

Post by 2GNeonSE » Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:09 pm

hey guys,

my name is Stephanie. BIG into honda/DSM and then I got a 2002 dodge neon for free. its my first automatic car and I have hated it.....until I saw hul kogan's neon on here.

viewtopic.php?t=40800&start=0

the only thing i know about neons is the notorious tranny problems, which i suffer from. for 118k miles id say the interior/exterior is mint. plan on doing little things here and there to it. nothing major; suspension, CAI, and miscellaneous appearance mods.

What's this notorious ATX problem you speak of?

The radiator failing??

And welcome to the site.

Welcome! make sure to check out the threads on 02+ atx transmissions, theres a lot of good info out there as well as some good preventative maintenance you can do to save yourself some headaches later on.

yes! at 112k the radiator went, and had to replace all lines. as for my trans..it's confused. occasionally it will go from first, to third, to second, to fourth under normal acceleration (nothing heave at ALL!) its also leaking tranny fluid. quarter sized amounts over night I'd say.

I really enjoy seeing what you guys have done with the neons. here's mine...its been way to cold to wash. and i have to park like that so the trans leaks on the concrete and not the black top

Welcome!

Depending on how bad the coolant damaged the internal parts of the ATX, it might need replaced/rebuilt. Your '02 has the 41te. If you are going used, you need to source from another '02, or PT Cruisers for best results. The '03 up neons, use the 40te. The 41te is the better one.

BTW, if you plan on staying automatic, you can get a transmission cooler from jegs or something and use an MTX radiator to avoid the problem again. It will also extend the transmissions life.

Welcome. Hul Kogans neon is def one of the most favorite on here. Glad to see you start to enjoy it and wanna change it up a bit. Spending just a couple hundred dollars can really change the looks of it and satisfy you without really worrying about speed.

I'd say you should
1) Cold Air Intake
2) Mild drop. Maybe eibach pro kit lowering springs
3) Peel off your rear badges (dodge, se, dealership stickers)
4) Take of your side moldings.
5) Rid of stickers that make no sense
6) Tint your tail lights and maybe windows as well.
7) Aftermarket rims if you can afford
8) Have fun driving.
