2002 2.0 to 2005 2.4l SRT4 Neon Swap

Post by Skit4r » Fri Jan 13, 2023 2:23 am

Hello I have a 2002 Dodge Neon ES, Automatic transmission and I'm looking to swap to a 05 2.4l Turbo motor. I am also keeping the auto trans so I have a few questions on what parts I will need and how to do the full swap. Any tips will help .

I've read through a lot of forums, but most are 00-01 models or 03+, also most people are using manual transmissions so the srt4 ECU works for them, my case is a bit different so any help would be appreciated
Here's what I've got so far:

2006 PT GT ECU - ( I seen on another forum that these are the best computers to get, as they are the only ones that support the srt4 motor and the automatic transmission, if anyone knows a better option please let me know.)

SRT4 Throttle Body Unit
SRT4 Cold Air Intake Kit
SRT4 Wire Harness
Alernator
SRT4 Motor
SRT4 Turbo
SRT4 Intake Manifold
SRT4 Exhaust Manifold
Headgaskets
Timing Belt
Water Pump
Intercooler
Intercooler Pipes
SRT-4 Blow Off Valve
SRT4 Upper Thermostat Housing
Thermostat
SRT4 Radiator Hose
SRT4 Radiator

I also have a full SRT4 body kit, so I believe the intercooler should fit.

Anything i should add or take off the list ? Please let me know this is my first project car I want everything to run smooth.

Only things to add to the list:

Patience

A 2002 service manual, one from Chrysler. Probably find one on eBay if you don't have one.

Possibly an SRT service manual. If you search online, you can find an '04 FSM to download in PDF format. Sorry, we cannot post direct links due to copyright legal stuff. Not sure that Stellantis would even care 18 years after the last model year has been sold.... But it is what it is.

And most likely a 2006 PT service manual, becuse the wiring will not be exactly the same as the SRT, or regular neon. The best thing would be to get a 2006 GT Cruiser for the entire wiring harness, and graft that to the neon under dash connector from the engine bay.

You will need a matching SKIM Module and key for that PCM. Hopefully all that came with it, or you'll need someone that can turn off the Security in it. Otherwise it is a paperweight.

I think the 2002 evap stuff can be wired in to make the 2003 newer PCM's happy. If not, you'll get a CEL light for those, but I don't thing that will keep it from working normally.

There isn't much information out there using a PT or other 2.4 PCM in a neon, because it just wasn't pursued probably due to the lower rev limit (N/A), and most either went with the SRT-4 PCM, or MS. Plus using the 41te wasn't extremely common.

Thanks the the advice, I have been finding myself rushing this project but that's because I'm really anxious to see the final result.

Also, I don't think the PCM comes with the SKIM and Key. Is that needed 100%? I thought once I find someone to program the PCM they'd be able to work around that.

Another thing , is the pt cruiser engine harness not the same? I just realized that the wire harness for the PCM is different so I'll have to buy that as well, does it matter which year? Could I use the srt4 wire harness or are the Pins different ?

And yes I've been up the last 2 nights reading through forums, not much on the 41te with srt4 swaps. So it's hard finding clear answers.

The SRT harness will not work because it never had the automatic transaxle (ATX)

Your 2002 uses a separate control module for the ATX.

The PT Cruiser, and every other model since 2003uses the PCM to control the ATX. 1996 to 2002 PCM'S are the SBEC design. 2003 up are NGC.

Grafting the PT harness to your 2002 is going to be way simpler than trying to make the NCG work with your SBEC and TCM engine/transaxle wiring.

There are people that might be able to turn off SKIM, but they are getting far and few between.

The one person that might be able to do it:

Update *** the 2.0 motor mount brackets are not the same as the ones for the 2.4l, luckily I found someone local with them but it delayed the swap by a day!

For future reference yes motor mounts are the same but the brackets are different

Still working on it, I ran into more problems,

1. Didnt have the Banjo Bolts (M12 X 1.25) for the coolant lines on the turbo

These parts also dont bolt into the new mounting brackets, so I had to also buy

1. SRT4 Power steering pump w/ pulley
2. AC Compressor

also waiting to get more parts that I will need to complete the swap
1. Oil catch can
2. Waste gate
3. charge pipe (not included in the intercooler piping kit I bought)

I believe after I get all of these, It should be finished. So far everything else is going fine, just finished dropping the engine and wiring the harness.

Sounds like you are making good progress. Can't wait to see the finished result!

Everything is put together and I'm ready to get her running , only problem I have right now is the wiring. My mechanic took a look at it and he also couldn't do it. Anyone have any tips or know what I should get?

I have both the

06 PT GT Cruiser harness A/T
&
05 dodge neon srt4 harness M/T
