PT cruiser 2.4 NA swap

Post by thump3r » Tue Sep 21, 2010 10:18 pm

ok well last night the timing belt went out of my daily driver 02.

i have read a couple post about doing the 2.4 pt cruiser swap is there anymore info on this??? will i need the pt ecu harness and all??? or will the 2.0 harness work and just lengthen some of the harness.

also intake and exhaust manifold?/ i take it the pt exhaust manifold is used, and intake manifold with have to use a srt or is there a better option for intake?

any more info and pics would be great!

I think the IM is going to depend on what year the PT head is? I am not too sure if they used the same IM design for all NGC years/forced or naturally aspirated.

You will need an '02 - older PT engine (bottom end) also. You could use the early Stratus head (if it is even different), IIRC to use a DOHC N/A neon IM.

The DOHC pcm is the best option, but wiring it might not be. Depend on how much time/patience/wiring diagrams/skill you have. The SOHC pcm can run it tho. The cam magnet needs turned 90º, or you can swap in 2.0 cams. There is plenty of info here, you just have to sort through it all.

i have done many engine swaps in the past. my show car i did the srt swap my Dakota i swapped a 5.7 hemi into it so wiring comes easy to me.

i can get a 2.4 from my work no problem either from a pt or stratus or what ever.

i just wanted to make sure that the SOHC ecu will work. and maybe if some one could send me in the right direction on what wiring i will need to deal with so i can have the pin outs and diagrams figured out.

also i thin everyone is using 1gn IM but im not sure.

For the SOHC pcm, I believe you just need to swap any sensors over that might be different, and turn the cam magnet either clockwise, or counter. Some wires may need to be extended. Plug wires switched.
These might help...

ill try to find some pics of my dakota

back on subject.

i compared pin outs between the pt cruiser and 02 dodge neon finding almost no differences. tomorrow im going to pull a harness of a pt along with the computer and going to compare them to my neons.

what i was hoping to do is use the computer from the pt cruiser and run the neons body harness. should make for a straight forward swap as long as i stay away from mobilizers

ok i done this heres what you have to do. swap the pins for the injectors per the revised way so the sequintal part stays right. you dont need to but the throttle response is better swapped. flip the coil driver wires. which is the out side two wires. i reccomend the pcm side for swaps. on the exhaust the pt mani bolts up to your down pipe like factory. intake wise you got two options. 1g that has the 90 cut off so you can use your tb or some fanagaling to use it stock. the bolt pattern will need to be drilled into your mani as they are different and not one hole will line up so ya know. or use the srt mani but there im not sure on what throttle cable would be needed. also starters are i.m. dependent tooo. keep them with the years of mani's. if you go the 1g intake route use the 1g starter it fits with minimal wire work. p/s a/c your on your own as i dont have it and moved my alt to the front. for wiring lengthen the coolant temp sensor wiring like 16"s make sure to cut splice solder heat shrink it properly or your whip will not run right. mounts its a direct fit use the pt engine brackets and the neon torque mounts. cooling use the stock stuff. heater hoses are dependent on intake mani useage. 1g dohcs for it or what ever for the other options. im sure ive missed some things but i done mine and can tell you the stock pcm does just fine on it. the 2.4 doesnt rev the highest but can so it works. if you wish to keep your timing covers pt all the way. i dont have a write up on hear on how to swap it but can easily walk you through any dificulties most will come to except the p/s and a/c.. hope fully i helped and answered your questions that you had or will have.

well i pulled th pt motor yesterday and this is what i have discovered.

im going to use a pt cruiser PCM and get it flashed so the SKIM is removed.

i figured out the 4 wires different which im going to use the PT cruiser engine harness.

im running the PT cruiser power steering and ac pump just swapping the power steering reservoir.

i have a srt intake manifold and im in the middle of fabricating a TB adapter to use the pt TB since its a 4 wire stepper IAC

From all I've read, that is not possible. SKIM can only be activated, and never deactivated. Once the PCM sees SKIM, it is forever a SKIM pcm. You would need to buy a new PCM, and make sure there isn't any SKIM components in the car, that it will sense, or it will become SKIM equipped.

i got thinking since i work at the wrecking yard where i got all the parts from i might see if the sentry key system is in the pt and i can use everything into the neon. and swap out my ignition switch to the pt's

i want to try it first with out as i remember only seeing a black key for the ignition no grey chipped key so i might be ok.

ok big update.

after getting a motor that wasnt a 02 and turned out to be a ngc 05 that my boss let on was a 02. and i never paid attention to where the crank sensor was located.

any how. i changed the complete front harness to a 05 neon also changed the dash over and used the 05 neon engine harness.

im using the pt computer with the pt skim and key since i used the dash harness im just swapping the tumbler.

if your using the 02 motor and harness like i originally planned just swap in the 2.4 motor extend a few wires for the engine harness everything plugs right into factory location all i did was wire in the immobilizer with the key taped to it under the dash

4 wires

constant power
ignition
ground
data link ( vilot /yellow)

the data link wire is a single wire that runs to almost everything that see different resistances and pulses

just need to tap into the wire at the data link plug on the bottom of the driver side dash by the kick panel

OK big UPDATE!!!

car is driving.... and anyone that says its a waste i tell you other wise. its a blast to drive has awesome power and LOTS of torque. i can honestly say im shocked how much more power the car has.

i have 730.00 total invested in my swap. thats with a 05 pt cruiser motor, srt power steering pump assembly, srt upper thermostat housing / rad hose, i rebuilt my t350 transmission, 03 rt pcm with immobilizer and keys, also swapped the dash out from a 05 neon and front harness. engine harness is a modified 05 neon harness, srt-4 intake manifold/ TB. booger bushings, PT clutch

im running a 03 RT pcm, and 24# injectors they seem to have the best combo for this motor. that i ave tried so far.

im going to take pics of the car as sad to say i am putting the car up for sale as i am looking into a different car for a daily.

Would i suggest this for anyone else, easy answer is hell ya! now since mine was a 02 it is more work swapping harness's but hell 15 min to remove the dash and the harness just pulls out. so for any one with a 03+ neon this would be a AWESOME low budget power gain. and yes your doing the same amount of work as a srt-4 swap but for WAY WAY less. as i have close to 4500 in my srt swapped 2000 neon.

This is great news !!

So, if this can be done with a 2002 Neon, by "retro-fitting" it with an NGC engine and harness, I imagine it would be just as easy to swap a 2003+ Neon over to a 2.4.

it would be easy!

the motor will bolt right in just swap injectors to 24# and re wire for the coolant temp sensor, and 02 sensors are different connectors.

use the srt intake manifold,/ power steering and thermostat housing and your set.

you can also use the 1gn intake manifold, relocate the ps reservoir from the pt motor, and use a stratus thermostat housing

if you use the 1gh dohc intake it has the water neck on it

and pre ngc just use older 2.4L lol from caravan or stratus ect

then let it break again with a 2.4 non interference ftw

i was wondering when 2gn's would start doing 2.4 n/a swaps i never imagined it being harder mabe even easier then a 1gn

This should either get cleaned up with clear information on what is needed to make this work with what year car(pre NGC/NGC) what engine (pre NGC/NGC) and what pcm(pre NGC/NGC) and stickied, or a new thread created with that info and stickied since this is new territory.

i could take pics a do a full write up on how to do the 2gn swap.
but i got to say its pretty much straight forward.

for a 00 - 02 swap use a 02 or older motor out of stratus, pt's caravan what ever.

for 03 + use a 03+ 2.4

intake manifolds if your 00 - 02 easiest would be a 1gn DOHC intake and TB since there the older 3 wire IAC you will need to use the power steering that cam with the motor

on 03 + i would use the srt-4 intake manifold and TB but you can use the 1gn again. if you use the srt IM you will need the srt PS and upper thermostat housing and rad hose.

i would also suggest upgrading the clutch to the pt clutch.

the stock starter bolts right on and clears

instead of using the PS lines from the srt i modified them and used a PS cooler from a rt charger i got a work and re routed the line.

this isnt complicated at all and im loving the swap. not only is it great on fuel the car pulls hard and makes for a fun daily driver.

You do realize that using a 1gn throttle body is more of a pain in the ass than its worth? 2gn cables dont match and all sorts of stuff. Also using a 1gn Dohc intake requires Dohc starter to fit under the intake.

my map sensor block on the manifold was already cut off sine it came from car with mega squirt . so all i did was make a block off plate and mounted the map sensor off another port added for the megasquirt.

i havent done the dohc im so i wouldn't know all the little specs but i looked at one at work and it wouldn't have been that difficult to use. as i found the srt intake worked out for the best in my application.
