Engine Removal question

Post by Cbussilver01es » Mon Sep 27, 2010 9:04 am

Here in the next few weeks, I plan on taking the motor out in my car and building it and throwing in another dohc motor so I can drive the car until I complete the motor. My question is would it be easier to take the transaxle off first and then use my hoist to take the block out or should I just take the whole thing out from the bottom like someone suggested. Thnx in advance guys..

Bottom is probably the easiest without having to take half the stuff apart

if your hoist is capable of angling the motor then you can leave the trans on but if not than yes removing the trans is easier since it doesnt exactly lift right out. if u can angle the motor, then set the hoist to angle the motor so the trans is on the bottom when lifted and it come out easy.

I see, I just figured that it would be easier to unhook the trans first and then lift the long block out

Leaving the trans in saves you the additional work of removing the halfshafts. But you will need to take the bolts off of the flexplate to flywheel, which IMO is easier than pulling axles. I just pulled the 3.0 from the GF's car, and left the trans in. (Sundance) I even was able to get the engine out the top without removing the hood. I used a cherry picker tho, not a ceiling hoist. Hood would definitely need to come off for that.

yeah i just got done doing a motor swap for a buddy of mine. Out the top is def easier. just leave the trans and axles in, they will dangle from the trans mount just fine, you dont have to support it.
Like others have said make sure you get all the brackets removed so the trans and engine can separate. To give yourself some wiggle room just remove the IM, exhaust manifold, the alternator can stay on.

Ill take the intake manifold off, but it is a bitch to get the turbofold off the exhaust side since I figured it would be easier to take all that off once the motor is out of the car lol

as tight of a space there is usually back against the firewall i hope you can get it out, i'm not saying it cant be done, but it is easier without it.

unbolt trans and manifolds, and go out the top. easiest way imo, i have it down to like an hour.
