2.4 caravan to neon

I've been offered a 2.4 dohc engine out of a 00 caravan for a swap on my 03 sohc & have done some searching on here and found that the IM off the caravan and pt cruiser won't fit and that the 1st gen IM would be the best way to go but I still have a couple questions

1) My main question concerns the IM, TB, TPS etc... Would I be able to bolt up a 1st gen IM with no problems or will I need to do a 90 degree cut. Also will I be able to reuse my TB?

2) As for our PCM, will I need to do a pin out?

3) Any other things I'm over looking (wire harness, motor mounts, etc..)?

You have bigger issues than all that to worry about. Your Neon is a NGC, the 2000 2.4 is not.

Keep looking.

Too bad it isn't the other way around.

There are trigger wheels to convert NGC 2.4's to SBEC. But the SBEC blocks/cranks cannot be made to work in an NGC set up. The wheel is cast into the crank, as where NGC they are bolted on.

So an 01+ 2.4l block runs off the NGC?

But '01 up have a different intake manifold bolt pattern. You need to do some modding to make a 1gn IM fit them, or use an SRT IM/homemade to fit in the neon.

You can bolt an older 2.0/2.4 DOHC head onto an '01/'02 block tho.

With some effort, a SOHC can even be made to work. For under 6000 RPM, a Magnum head would probably perform just as good as a DOHC. Yes a DOHC might out flow a Magnum, but like camshafts, it is all relevant to what your RPM goals are. ;)

All you have to do is drill 2 holes to make the older manifold fit the newer cylinder head. Why does everyone make such a huge deal out of this?

I don't see where Bill made a big deal out of it. He just said you need to do some modding.

Why dont you junk the block and just use the head from it with an srt4 IM as previously stated by one of the masters? That would be the best direction IMO. Im not sure about the caravan motor but based on youtube it can take the srt4 turbo setup. Your still aways from that though (I presume)

Speaking of drilling 2 holes to make a 1gn intake fit a later 2.4, I see you would drill right in to the valley of the head. Do you just seal up the bolts you use? I have a srt head I'm gonna use and have a srt intake and a 1gn AMM box intake.

The IM gasket would probably contain any oil that seeped past the threads. Unless the gasket was damaged at the bolt hole. Or the bolt head and/or IM flange were scored.

A plastic IM with the o-ring gaskets would be another matter.

In all, it is only oil splashing, and not pressurized. It would be pretty simple to seal with a bit of RTV on the bolt.

Yea if I try it I may just drill my AMM intake and not the head.

Say Bill if I were to use my 1gn AMM intake on the srt head could I just drill the one top hole in the intake instead of drilling the head for the 2 holes?

That's pretty slick but rather expensive.

There's always the junkyard.

Something else to go 'shopping' for when going to the Pick-and-Pulls. :D

Looks like it only came on the 01 2.4 stratus and sebring. I'll keep my eyes peeled, but I'm thinking this is going to be a hard to find piece

...If you look at the parts diagram posted above, item #1, the intake manifold has a price according to that link below of $438.75 yes that is expensive. 1st gen Neon lower intake bolts to this upper intake.

..But if you look at item #8, the turbocharger assembly, it doesn't look like the SRT or PT turbo set up. I think it's the Mexican Stratus turbo setup, it looks like a turbofold kind of like what's on SRT/ PT. What is getting my attention here is the price, $417.50. If that's correct and it's available... Forget the N/A 2.4 swap, everyone add a turbo. :D

yes but a 2.4 na set up would be much more powerful in the long run than a 2.0 dohc/sohc set up, stock the 2.4 will blow away both motors due to the amount of torque it produces vs the 2.0. i believe its rated at like 160+ torque while the magnum and the 2.0 dohc are only around like 132. we both know there is no replacement for displacement unless you go turbo. the other issue i find with the magnum is it doesnt really get off its ass till around 4500 and seems to fall flat on its face as you get closer to redline. I have the magnum now stock and after 11 years of driving it i'm sick of it. I'm counting down the days till i can buy a 2.4 and toss it in the car.

Not to discourage you from swapping in the 2.4.... :) But you may want to use this as an 'excuse' to upgrade the factory exhaust, to 2.5 in.

Opening up the exhaust on my Magnum-cyl.head swapped 1st gen, made a HUGE difference in the power curve - both low-end torque and top-end improved. :D
I swapped out the cat converter as well.... Replacing the factory 2.5 inlet / 2.25 outlet unit, with an aftermarket 2.5 inlet / 2.5 outlet.

Not to mention, if you swap over to a 2.4, you'll want to upgrade to a 2.5 in. exhaust anyways - So it will already be ready.

i had 2.5 on the car. i was running the trubendz 2.5 catback for years, replace sections of it after it rusted out as well. the nail in the coffin with that exhaust was that the left exhaust outlet fell off so i got a replacement that put me back at 2.25 with the current exhaust i have. i'm planning on going back to 2.5 catback before i buy and rebuild the 2.4. i've been driving this car since i drove it off the lot back in june of 2002. after 180k miles i want a better motor.
