Cupholder LED wiring

Post by InStere0 » Fri Aug 03, 2007 4:24 am

Sorry guys I'm a total noob at this but can anyone tell me how to wire some LED's so I can have the cupholders light up? I need to know where the best place would be to get the power for them and how many and what kind of LED's to get.

Thanks guys.

easiest way, 1 led per cupholder from the bottom pointing up. wire them individually with a resistor, dont wire them in series of 4. (you can, but if one goes, they all go, thats how i did it the first time, then i had to redo it, plus they would dim with my subwoofoer hittn lol. . the resistor on each one keeps it stable and from gettin a current overload)

i drilled a hole just about the same size as the led, maybe i smidge smaller, and they hold nice and tight, also i put silicon on the backing of them to protect the wiring and such from any moisture gettin in.. wired them all to a switch. then wired that switch to a power wire w/ inline fuse from the battery.,, i have some other stuff connected to that power source too..

BUT, in your case, if its just leds then wire them to a switch where you want, and then tap into the back of your cig lighter wires since they are right there..

i strongly reccommend a switch, since there will be times when you want to turn them off..

edit added for the original poster, i forgot to add what kind etc...
you can get them from

http://www.oznium.com/led
and order them with the proper resistor for complete cheap DIY..

or if your lazy, get them prewired ready to go
http://www.oznium.com/prewired-leds

i got mine on ebay for super cheap i think 25 for 1$, blue 10,000MCD (brightness) which i think are brighter than ozniums, and they came with resistors but you cant go wrong with those links above... and read the forums too.....

disclaimer: i am in no way financially affiliated with oznium.com blah blah blah..... lmao..

probably... although i did it before i knew the scions even had it, someone over on oznium.com had done it, but they could have gotten the idea from that.
the scions i think are just dim lighted rings around the cupholders though.. i like how these make the bottle glow..

and if you put 1 red 1 green and 1 blue in the cupholder, and hook it to a meteor controller from oznium, u get a color morphing cupholder.... lol.. someone did it, and had a video for it, a bit too much for my taste though..

Nupe. They have LED's in the cupholders as well. Hell, you can even get neons under the dash.

I love scions more than i do my neon. Hence why i know so much.

Reguardless, when I re-do all my glow-y crap, I'm throwing leds in the cupholders.

Ok, cool. My first thought was to wire them to the cig lighter, but wasn't sure if that was a good way to do it. I'm definately getting a switch. It looks pretty cool but I'm sure it gets annoying after a while to have them on.

Thanks for the help.

Just my 2 cents, if I were to do the 1-LED-per-cupholder method, I would definitely put them facing the front of the car so they're not insanely bright at night. That way, it will have that nice glow, but they won't be staring you in the face. Unless you're into that kind of stuff.

its really not that bad.. and i dont use them all the time.. but you can sand the tip to diffuse the glow so its not so bright....

i tried what u suggested first, and the leds are directional, so it wasnt even.. it was like a spotlight on the front side of the cupholder... i didnt like it.. maybe 3 or 4 around it would be better to fill any gaps.
