Odometer reprogram...

Post by 01NeonSnooZer » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:23 pm

I was under the impression that if you put a new guage cluster in your car, you could legaly take it to the dealer to have the odometer reading changed to match the mileage of your car. Is this a misconception and would i be able to do this with an SRT-4 cluster? I was also under the impression that the mileage was stored in the PCM (or HEC -controls the instrument cluster-module in fords as that is what I'm used to working on) stored the mileage and if you put a new cluster with an electronic odometer in a car, the correct mileage would display. Is this incorrect?

ODO stores the milage and the PCM also has the milage.... If you put a new cluster in, I do not think the dealer will do it.

Make pics with date with the old odometer and after installing with the new odometer that you can tell later a seller why the milage is not correct.

or you could just keep the stock cluster and swap it back in if you ever sell the car

none of these solutions will accpount for mileage accrued after the cluster swap. The new cluster would either be too much or too little and the old one will absolutely too little after you rack up mileage on the other cluster.

personal experience. just traded my sxt in on an srt. had an srt cluster in the sxt, traded it with the car. i got a call from the dealer saying they needed the old cluster because with the brake light on the srt cluster, the car won't pass inspection. so i took it to them, told them there's about a 3k miles difference between stock displayed and actual, and they said it's not a problem, they'll just get ir reprogrammed. so they CAN do it. now, whether or not they WILL do it on an srt cluster going into a non-srt, that's going to be at the particular service managers discretion. plus they'll have to keep your car in their shop until it's complete if they do do it.

also, if you sell your car w/o actual mileage displayed, it's your responsibility to inform the buyer that there is a discrepency, as it is a felony to not do so. you could also inform DMV and cover yourself that way. in my case, there was a difference of odo displaying 63 less miles than the car actually had, the dealer said they didn't care. then they realized they couldn't pass inspection on it, and were pissed that they'd have to spend more money getting the odo corrected.

Edit: srt cluster is for sale in the parts for sale forum. check it out.

the dealer near me told me i had to buy a cluster new from them, then leave the car so they can send it out to get programmed, they dont do it inhouse... big$$$$

so thats why i have a cluster sittin on a shelf waiting for my car to catch up to it so i can swap it in and the mileage is accurate

^ thank you. That is the first idea I have heard that isn't gonna cost me a crapload of money. all i would have to do is find one with 79K or 80K and I'd be great.

this is what you do:

install new cluster.
check to see if your mileage matches.
you put your front end on jackstands.
put the car in D or R depending on the mileage.

Doesn't the milage go foward, even if you have the car in reverse?
