This is Fogged up!

Post by excon » Sat Sep 13, 2008 10:51 am

When I first bought the car the windshield would never fog up. Now, whenever I get in at night the windshield is fogged up. When I put the defroster on it either does nothing (unless I put it on the highest setting), or it takes care of the problem about half way and then starts to fog up itself right at the bottom.

Any suggestions? I realize the reason it fogs is for the uneven temperatures on either side of the glass. I'm assuming there's more humidity in my car that on the outside. Should i get a dehumidifier?!

Is it fogging on the inside, or the outside? If it is the inside you may have a small leak letting water in and it is evaporating, then condensing on the cool glass.

" and then starts to fog up itself right at the bottom"
This would be from the cold air from the A/C cooling the glass. The compressor runs with the defroster. Turning the heat up a little will cure that.

Check your floors to see if they are damp as well as the floor of your trunk.

You may have some moisture inside thats causing it.

seriously check it I had this problem and ignored it and then one day i opened the trunk to find a horrible smell and I had water there under the donut with shit growing on it. It seems like this is a common problem

I get this problem from wet floor mats in winter time. I just drive around with the floor heat on, and let it dry out the floor. Better floor mats will also help keep the floor dry.
If its water in the trunk, check your taillights seals, and trunk seal, as these are the common spots for water to leak in.

recently, I checked uhder my trunk carpet, and the pads were wet. There is a small gap between my tail lights and the body from when i swapped in new tail lights. I know there's a thread around here about sealing them with bathtub caulk or something?

Caulk may or may not be overkill. I used silicone, and since I still have my stock tails I went and bought another taillight gasket for $8 at the dealership. Fixed my leak. To reinforce the seal, I sprayed all around the inside with GreatStuf, but I think it was the new gasket that fixed the problem. GreatStuf is a real mess, though, and it's hard to work with.
