looking for another location for gauges

ok, so here is the deal, i found out that the oil pan that i got on my built engine has an oil temp sensor right in it already, so i figured why not get one more gauge to go in it.... so i started thinking about doing something with my gauges AGAIN.... here is my current setup
i do not have any other recent pics, but my tach is about where a srt pod is located (2 1/16 size)
my thoughts would be something like this. (i would make my own)
http://neongoodies.com/Goodies/Cluster_ ... 2G_POd.jpg
i would go with a pillar, but i do not like them at all, just because it screems race me... i like to keep all my gauges low, and "concealed"
i like how the cobalt ss boost gauge is, not sticking out of the pillar as much as the normal pillar gauges (opi i am sure knows what i am talking about)
it is either that, or take out the radio, move it down some and pull all the gauges in the center peace (removing my heater controls, i dont use them anyway)

Pillars may seem "race," but your setup looks pretty rice.

just an idea.
Looks dope IMO. this is the pod sold for my car. But would love to see it done to a neon!

ok, i got some pics just now, here is what it is as of right now.
what it looks when someone would pull up next to me..... ( i want to keep this look as much as posible)
i have looked into those pods like for the vw, and i saw one in a neon recently, but i just did not like how it looked, plus the guy cut out the dash to make it look right....
my thought was to move the tach to the pod by the door,(airvent) and the boost into the gauge cluster type pod...(if i got that way) (really botherd me that autometer did not make a mini tach, had to go with a vdo)

couldn't u fit a guage in the little sunglass holder thing under the little overhang part of the dash?

They have those triple pods for the Neon.
Anyways, dtjackten, that link you posted with the pods molded into the gauge trim....love it! I was looking for one of those! I'd so much rather have one of those that a pillar mount in the Neon. Is that something you are working on, or someone else has?

no it is something that was available from neongoodies, and i will be doing one for myself i am thinking soon.

excuse my ignorance...
but notice yer still using the low end stock gauge cluster without a tach...couldn't you just do the upgrade stock cluster swap to give u a built in tach?..then you can use the spot yer tach is in now for a different gauge?
..and I take it this is not a daily driver, cuz you've covered all your vents with gauges (?)...seems like it would be awefully hot in the summer...even if you did a A/C delete... would be nice to have some air flow, no?

accually the heater is not even hooked up right now,(prolly will never be) my car never had ac, and the air flow i roll the windows down, my car usually does not see rainy days, so really i dont use any of that stuff... so the vents were not improtant to me....
as for the upgraded gauge cluster i have thought about that, and call me anal, but i have never seen a black faced stock gauge cluster with a tach... if mopar made one, or even an overlay for one, that would be an option for me, but i am picky and dont want black faced gauges with a white face gauge cluster...

What about on the side of the knobs?

hmmmm..... if i did that i would still have to pull the control out the back for clearence.... but it could be a posibility.....

That would be perfect, just wish mph would be in bigger numbers... but still i could live with it. i am betting they would be a pritty penny though?
i think i would do the gauge pod also... just need one more gauge if i got a guage cluster like that... hmm...
also superdan, was that a direct swap?

Yes it's a direct swap, I have that cluster also. But it is only available in canada on 2002 LX models. Its pretty rare up here. I was lucky to get mine for 50 bucks. But I haven't seen another at the wreckers since. I will take a look around the wrecker databases today for you.

If you don't use the AC knobs, why not just get rid of them and put more gauges there?

by dtjackten
^ i have thought about that as well accually, and the nice thing about that is every gauge would be right next to eachother...
anyone know if they make a black overlay for the white face gauge cluster?

speedhut.com makes them

EDIT: that is pritty pricey for faces, but it would be different.. I did not-a-srt in it to.... hmmmmm...... i may have to do this seeings i can get a guage cluster prolly pritty cheap....
also, i was just wondering is a r/t a direct swap to a se neon gauge cluster but just a higher mph speedo? i may have to get the gauge cluster out of that r/t i got my sideskirts and rear disk brakes, i am going to the junkyard today at lunch anyway????

R/T is plug and play. Plus, you get a low fuel light, a beeper that tells you to shut off the turn signal that has been blinking for the past mile, etc.

really? i think i am going to see how much they want for it then buy one of the boards from speedhut.com, i can get them to match my autometers PERFECT. so i think i will be happier that way
i just read the sticky above about taking the clusters apart... how do u calibrate the needles after u take them off the board? anyone know?
Posted: Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:46 pm
by superdan
yes the LX cluster is a direct swap. I went a head and swapped the circuit boards so i could get my original milage from my old cluster
it needs calibrated bad but im not going to risk fucking it up...I broke all the needles cause i didnt have the proper tool to get them off

by dtjackten
oh.... so the needles are a bitch to get off... hmmm... how does it get calibrated?

I made a pod on my Steering Column Cover and added another on top door panel where it houses the manual mirror knob..
Steering Cover
Door Panel
I'll take a pic later tonite and post them with my interior back in.. Those up top are old.

thanks demon, u have a pm back...
i would like to see pics of those pods from the drivers seat if u can z3roneo, a very cool idea i think

Here they are.. All shots are from me sitting the Drivers Seat with my LG Vu.
I'm about 6'3'', have Srt that are all the way back and tilt back a lil..
I made the Column Pod sit in between the RPM Guage so I would be able to see all the numbers and of course the needle. And I made the Door Panel Pod face me so that I didn't have to turn my head but just move my eyes, almost like the pillar pod setup.
My Dash is on the Balcony waiting for me to finish'er.
Shoulda been done months ago but what can I say... I'ma slacker sometimes..

i like the door pod, but i am not sure about the pod in the steering wheel colum though... nice work on both!
i picked up the gauge cluster bezal, so i am going to mess with that, i also am getting a gauge cluster from a local junk yard. and then i am going to go with the overlay from speedhut, i can get them to match almost perfect to my autometers.
