Finally, I will have a red lighting HVAC overlay! It took me about a year to find a simple, effective solution.

Image

Just need to trim it, then add some red and blue film, then install it!

I need to install the white bulbs again to see how it looks when lit, but here's a really crummy pic of it completed next to the OEM overlay.

Image

This is a mod for the crazies only :D

First you need to remove the OEM overlay. Then sand off everythig from the backside. Start with 600 grit and work up to 2000. Then you need to polish it to a shine. The graphic is a vinyl I had cut from a recreation of the overlay that I built in Adobe illustrator about a year ago. As you can see, it's just a replica of the OEM overlay. This is why you must polish the overlay that is now clear. You're applying the vinyl from the backside, so it must be completely glossy for the vinyl to appear nice and black from the front. Next I used some red and blue tint film to add the color, then a layer of white mylar to back it using a spray adhesive to hold it together and complete the overlay sandwich. Then it's just a matter of using permanent two-sided tape to install it.

Piece of cake

*** edit ***

Here it is with some backlighting. Nevermind the multi-colored knob inserts. They're just my extra set that I use to test fit inserts before I ship them.

The areas without a film on them look too yellow to me.

Every area is covered in film, either blue or red. It's not nearly as orange-y as it looks in the pics. The knob surrounds are flame red, so that should give you an idea of how off the colors are. I'll get some better shots today.

Hey u don't have to sand it. U can just use laquer thinner and it will take off that film. It's a lot easier then sanding.

Lacquer thinner and plastics is a big no no. You get lots of hazing and cracking if you use thinners. I strongly recommend against it.

You also run the risk of getting thinner on the face of the over lay, which would obliterate the graphics on that side as well :(

That happened to me on my first attempt I didn't realize it had spilled onto the other side and messed up my cluster. Luckly that was a spare cluster that I tried it on.

It's just an unwarranted rick if you ask me. I know the sanding takes longer, but it's "safer"

And this is why. I know I've made my fair share of mistakes in the past. Now that I'm a tad older I tend to err on the side of caution.

No. Aaron usually take a few days to get back. I'll send him a text today if I don't hear back from him. He gets like 50 pm's a day, so it tends to take him a bit to sort through the BS.
