Started work on the SRT-4 bumper and hood

Post by daaboots » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:13 pm

After about 6 months i finally got around to my damaged SRT-4 bumper. I bought a bumper repair kit and started to work at it.

Just need to sand it down once it's dry. The great thing about this repair kit is that the filler remains flexable once it's dry so you dont have to worry about it cracking.

Next up, my SRT-4 hood

Agreed, keep up the good work, we all know what an SRT fascia is worth new and your getting it back to that point....
If I had to pay for everything new on the front of my car it's more than $2k worth of parts, got to love the cost of used pieces!!!

Thanks for the complements everybody. Yes, SRT-4 parts are very expensive new which is why I bought these used pieces even though they were damaged. I knew it would be a lot of work but I'm saving a lot of money :D

*Update* - Finished sanding first application of the bumper filler and added a second coat so smooth things out.

lolEBs friend says:

What is the products name you are using by chance? Do they have a website? Can I purchase this online?

My friend has a crack in the bumper on his civic, he's kinda interested. I also recently purchased a SRT bumper as well, that has a crack that needs fixing, and im interested too. Thanks.

This is what I bought. Also came with plastic gauze tape.

Bought it at Canadian Tire. Don't think you have that store in the USA so check some other type of automotive store i guess.

The product: http://www.dominionsureseal.com/product ... 6&catid=36 I guess they call it a plastic repair kit now.

I don't think its going to work. The spots that you are fixing are high stress areas. ESPECIALLY the moutning point on the side of the bumper. I had 3 cracks in the bumper I got. 2 on the mounts at the top of the bumper on the core support and one in the middle of the drivers headlight. I had my bumper professionally fixed. I know what you are thinking...... just cause its professionally done doesn't mean squat..... but this shop wasn't a BS shop. They know their stuff. I've got enough experience to be able to pick out people who are talking out their ass. Anyway..... the crack in the bumper under the headlight came back. When you install the headlights you must bend the bumper to move out of the way and this puts stress on that area. I wish you the best, but don't be suprised when this doesn't work. I'd say try the bumper on the car for a few weeks before you go have it painted as that may be a waste of money. Good luck though.

Yes.... but your aftermarket bumper is probably fiberglass. The stock bumpers aren't. The urethane resin stuff that they use wouldn't help much with the mat. I understand what you are saying. Just be careful with it and don't hit any curbs or anything and you might be fine. Don't go high speeds either. *LOL*

oh, fuck. Autobahn. gotta love that. drove there before. you can drive fast there, u'll get a kick out of driving past cops doing 120+, but don't try to fuck with other drivers. u'll get ur a$$ into some deeeeep shit. it's considered a crime to even honk at a slow driver, as long as he's not goin slower than the speed limit. It's prooven that Autobahn is the safest highway in the world. the damn road isn't even made out of the real concrete. it's made out of some synthetic sh!t.

*Update - Few more coats of the bumper repair putty along with some sanding.

Image

Started work on the hood. I grinded all the rust down to bare metal, tried to get the dents out as best I could with a hammer, and started work with the bondo.

^Yeah that's pretty tough to do on a curved surface like the fascia...definitely worth a shot though if you can match the colors.

that bumper turned out GREAT congrats! you could have also just used fiberglass and any type of resin, instead of that thick paste... basically, on the outside youd stretch one layer across the mounting points and the crack on the side, and gently work in the resin till the fiber is all wet (you can even do it with your hand), and then reinforce the back either like you did or again with resin and fiberglass... once it's cured just sand the fiberglass smooth, and blend in the sheet of fiberglass with the rest of the bumper... saves a lot of work if you ever get to do this again :P i wish i took a picture of this intake scoop i fixed for this MR2 guy, it'd be worth 1000 words
