Differences between neon instrument clusters

Post by srtgtr34 » Fri Aug 21, 2009 1:58 pm

I got my fourth instrument cluster today and noticed it is not like my others..

The one I just got, came from a 2004 neon and had a different board and layout than my 2002 and stock 2000 cluster

Here is a pic of them all.

The top is the black faced stock 2000 cluster
the middle is the 04 white faced
the bottom is the 02 white faced board

Image

Here is a closer pic of the 2000 board

Image

obviously its missing the four pins for the tachometer
The is an upsidedown 2 on the top of the board (idk what thats from)
The other lighted signals are positioned differently

Here is the 04 cluster I just got:

Image

The chip configuration is different from the other tach board
This board is missing two lighted sockets on the very bottom that are shown on the 02 board.

The two large black capacitors are in slightly different positions on the two tach boards.

Image

The coolant illumintaion light socket is closer to the gauge in the 02
cluster than the 04
This o2 board looks alot more cluttered than the newer 04.

Differences between all three boards:

I was reading the numbers on the chips and most of them were different.
The turn signal chips (the blue ones) are differently positioned on all of the boards
The large white rectangular transistor thing is positioned differently on them all

I just thought this was cool so I posted it up..

And sadly as I found out today, the 04 cluster does not work right in my neon... I know its not the cluster because my 2nd cluster, which cam from an 03, did the same exact thing.

when you initially plug the cluster in they would work as they are supposed to, but when the car sits for at least 30 mins or later, none of the gauges work..

Well now I have a 2001 r/t cluster coming, which is probly another design I can add to this thread..

To all the peopl who say that all the clusters are interchangebale throught the years 00-05, I think your wrong... I believe the only years that are compatible are the 00-02 only and the 03-05 only.

Well then you learn something new everyday, that's strange why they made so many changes to something like that. And you sir..... You are a cluster whore!

Its not my fault I go through so many clusters.. lol.

Well the r/t cluster should be my last. And I'm going to be doing something very unique to it, that I have never scene done so far to neons.

Pretty nice reference pics.

Damn, I wish I can remember what year car my cluster came from. It's not the original 01 from my car, but man I really wish I remembered the year.
I got a white faced one and it has worked fine for 10k+ miles.

I have an 04 Neon SE.

I saw a 01 Neon ES Cluster on eBay with the same miles I'll hit soon. But that seems to have an ABS light. I don't know if it's just a place holder or expects ABS. Will it work in my 04 neon?

I found another cluster on ebay from an 04 SXT but that is 3K miles lower than mine! I heard the PCM also stores the miles.

I think u can have the dealer re-sync the cluster miles.

I doubt they will even check the miles in the PCM Just tell them your original cluster died and you replaced it. Nothing illegal about that. the only thing you need to remember is to check the mileage statement when selling the car. As far as emissions testing, the mileage has no bearing.

The dealer cannot change or effect milage in either the PCM or cluster.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

My neon is a 2004 SE.

So I got a white face tach cluster from ebay. . The donor was a 2000 Neon ES. It was plug and play and works

BUT it doesn't CHIME if you drive without releasing the parking brake. :( Bummer! Did the 2000 neon ES cluster not have that chime??

Can someone with a 2000 cluster confirm?

Or Do I have to like reset the computer by disconnecting the batt ?

When I had my 2000 cluster on it never chimed. Now that I have the 01 rt cluster it chimes for many different things lol

Oh well... so now I got a cluster with Tach but no parking brake chime!

I am guessing adding by moving something over from my 04 non-tach cluster it is way too difficult.

The only time mine "chimes" with the parking brake is when it is on and the car is rolling. Lol and yes I had to put on new rear brakes.

I am ware of that. The 2000 Neon ES cluster with tach isn't doing that... while my 2004 non-tach cluster did!!.
