Damn good deal on the gaskets. Makes me regret the rebuild kit I bought from MPx.

So, are you also going to pull the middle layer out of the headgasket too?

I dunno, I have heard both bad and good things about removing the middle. Perosnally, yes, I would love too! BUT, I probably will just mill the head .030".

Well, since you already bought a head gasket, I wont mention a cometic head gasket which happens to come thinner anyway...\

BTW, check your PM's.

I looked for a cometic, but could only find it for the 96-99, and not in SOHC...? Oh well, I got a MLS one, so I can remove a layer or two... also, got your PM, check yous ;)

Well, bought the last of my products for the rebuild, and unfortunately I will NOT be getting a crankscraper :( - but, oh well, next year I guess :D

------------
ORDERED
------------
Felpro head gasket set
Felpro oil pan gasket
Mopar rear main seal
DOHC Pistons
Piston Rings
Water Pump
Gates Tensioner Pulley
Gates Timing Belt
New Timing Cover
New Head Bolts
ATF4 MTX Fluid
Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Full Synth
SRT4 Guage Pod
Autometer Phantom Fuel Pressure Guage (Mech, under hood)
Autometer Phantom Oil Temp Guage
-----------------

My dad goes in for knee replacement surgery on the 21st of July, my car goes in their garage on the 21st of July and begins the tear down. I may be able to get the head milled by .030". I hope to have it all done by the end of August. I am going to clean up the engine bay as well. Also, hopefully I can do the intake polish, and maybe perhaps the engine mount. I will also try to do some exterior painting: the B & C Pillars, Mirrors, and the side of the door where my scratch is. I hope to get a new MFS switch to fix my fogs which always come on, but go off when I turn on the turn signal :? and I hope to have a new front driver fog light for the cracked one I have

Anyway, I will post a complete log of all I do, including pics and what not.

Will those things really make a big difference? I know the pistons will, but gaskets, water pump, etc..

Well its a necessity. He is almost at 100k and its a good idea to do most of those things. New gaskets, timing belt, waterpump, seals and pullies. Then his car will drive like new again.

Not sure how much power he is going to get out of the DOHC Pistons.

I hope to dyno it soon after the install... Hopefully, without tuning yet Iw ill hit the 150 whp mark, only 6hp away and I am bumping up the compression by a pt, from 9.8 to 10.8 (if I can get it milled and remove a layer of the head gasket). That should help some, plus the DOHC pistons will work will with all the other mods I have. I am also going to be doing some home Port and Polishing. :D Hopefully, the 150 mark will be more than hit, as in broken... I would love to see 160-170 whp mark with this car before I finish it. My last mod will be megasquirt and more suspension mods.

All the other stuff is being done because of all the crap I am taking apart - and the water pump and tensioner are being replaced because of the milage on the car (as well as timing belt).

UPDATE: If things go right, some more stuff will be going into the engine, more particularly, the ECU... MS :D

Updates to come in the next few weeks. We shall see. I should also be getting a crankscraper/windage tray along with it.

the complete build starts after my exam on July 1st.

Who knows... I got the fluids drained and the intake manifold off today (about 2hrs worth of work) and raised it up on jack stands... I will be taking off the belts an alt, and UDP sometime this week or next, removing the head, header, intake, and other bits and pieces before I tackle the tranny and begin the removing of the actual block. I am thinking a week to get everything off, and then I go on Vacation in Pensacol Beach, FL for 9 days, and then I get back to it. :D By the time I get back I hope to either have the block out and in the shop, or at least ready to remove. No pics yet, was hurried today and forgot the camera. :(

yeah, so far so good, not too bad... most of the work you seen done has been done one time or two before... I will be more afraid to put it back together though

Things done so far:

removed intake/CAI/TB
removed battery/tray
removed valve cover
removed all coolant piping up top
removed passenger wheel/well cover
removed top torque strut (engine mount)
removed all wires connected to the block
removed rocker arms
removed strut tower bar
removed AC/PS belt

Next:

remove UDP
remove engine mounting plate
remove exhaust header (LTH)
remove timing cover and components
remove magnum head
remove all pumps
remove timing belt tensioner pulley
remove tranny
remove crank seals
remove oil pan
remove block

Hopefully be done either this week or after vacation (Aug 2 - 10).

I love how you are documenting this process. The pictures help out a great deal. I know when I've done all my small stuff I had every intention of taking pictures, but then my hands get too grimy to pick up the camera or I just want to finish up the job. Good luck with this huge undertaking, I hope all goes smooth.

I am hoping without tuning for at least 155... I better, after all the work I am putting into it  But srsly. I would be happy with 155. After some tuning I would like to hit about 170 whp. We shall see....

I am doing this because I have to replace the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. I also need to replace the piston rings. Instead of just doing the rings I am doing higher compression pistons (DOHC) and porting and polishing the head and intake. More flow, more power.

More progress today, I took of the LTH (disconnected from head) and removed the alternator, removed PS pump, and a few other things - but here are some more pics...

I am also going out tomrrow to get a bunch of new tools, and an air compressor. I need the extra torque. I cannot get that damn UDP off. Besides, I need a compressor. :D

I'm guessing you'll hit about 153 with when you're done with the rebuild. The only thing contributing to that will be the increase in compression and the port/polish. Did you say YOU were going to do the port/polish work? Just curious. I'd like to do my own someday too, but I think I'll do a head, AND have someone like amm do a head as well. Two heads are better than one.

The only way you're going to hit 170 is with a different intake mani, MS and at least a Crane 14. You might get there with an AFX ecu and an SAFC, but MS would be more fun. A full 2.5" exhaust wouldn't hurt anything either, but I guess you're using that dump. Which is kind of cheating. JK.
