Well its almost done. Just need to get the intake, tb, filter, batter, and udp on. Then hook up some sensors and we're good to go. The only bad things that happened, were that I broke a ring compressor, and I think I smashed an a/c line, so its leaking now.

Here's some pics from today:

cylinder honing. #3 still needed a little work. The hone I rented from autozone had some weak stones, but overally I think the crosshatching will work well.

Oh hai crankshaft!

Things look weird down there w/o oil on them

Pistons in!!!!

Head back on
Image

Where I left off tonight. It got too dark to finish. Fluids are in, exhaust is on, but the udp needs to go on.

Are you doing all of this by yourself? I can never have the motivation or patience to do all this by myself lol.
Good job Chad.

Thanks everyone. Its amazing all that I've gotten done so far. I'm freakin exhausted though. All that has to go on now is the air filter when it dries, and the belts when the udp cools down. Then a once over on everything and we'll try starting her up.

Tam - Yup, all by myself.

BTW i sprayed the engine mount bracket with 'chrome' Rustoleum. It looks a lot better now. The battery tray and radiator brackets have been painted black. I threw away the outer timing belt cover since it was practically in pieces. However, I think I cracked an AC line last night when I was jacking the engine around to get the mount bracket on. It was hissing when I stopped working. Its no longer hissing, which makes me think all the refrigerant drained out. oh well. I may just rip it out anyway since its suppose to be a cold summer.

Well she started up. Little bit of engine vibration. The oil pressure is really bothering me though. its at about 10psi at idle even when I hit the throttle a little.

Even with the bent rod it was at about 40psi. Is it okay? I'm thinking its just blowby causing it b/c the pistons aren't seated in yet. Maybe the assembly lube is playing a role too. I just wanted some confirmation before I go out and start the break in.

I saw a post on the other .org about it too. I using some generic synthetic oil. That may be the issue too.

Blowby shouldn't cause low oil pressure.

A few things to check.

1) Are you 100% sure you didn't leave and bits of towel in the block/oil pan?

2) Did you remove the oil pickup tube to put the pistons in?

2a) Did you torque down the oil pickup tube bolt?

2b) Did you make sure the o-ring between the oil pickup tube is there and seated properly?

To add to 03blackrt's list:

-make sure the oil pressure sender is not plugged, and it is installed tight

-the oil pickup tube needs to be cleaned out REAL good when you do a rebuild, stuff gets caked into the mesh sometimes and then it won't flow

Thanks for the replys.

Towels are for sure out. I didn't touch the sender, it was still on there tight when I felt it. The wire still looks good too.

I did take off the oil sump. I do remember putting it back on, but I don't know if I torqued it down. I guess tomorrow I'll drop the oil pan and check it out, and try a different oil filter.

You guys are awesome. You were spot on. I had the oil pickup on finger tight. It was just flopping around. I must have got distracted when I went to grab my torque wrench. I fired her up and had great pressure. Now to break her in tonight.

Pics and vids later on.

Thanks again!

Thats my plan next month. I for sure want to get it dyno'd too. I think I get get a couple of runs for free at school.

Just got back from doing some 30-50-30 runs to break in the rings. The car performed great! The low end torque gain is pretty sweet. I can't wait till she's fully broken in. It did start to overheat when I was a block from my apartment. I think I still have some air to work out of the system.

^Thanks! Looking back, I can't believe I did all of that in a little about 3days.

Took here for a spin today to drop of my old oil and coolant. She started running hot, so I let the engine cool down, and put in some more coolant. I think that was the last of the air, since I just took another trip to fuel up and she ran great.

Tomorrow I have a 2.5hr highway trip back to school. I'm planning an alternate rout right now so I can vary my speed. I guess you're not suppose to have long periods of high speeds while still breaking in an engine.

Even w/o opening the throttle all the way, the butt dyno is very happy. Say I'm in 3rd. It now feels like I have the torque that I use to in 2nd. Pretty sweet. I'll try and take some pics tonight while I'm packing.

Nice Job

Not supposed to have long periods of high rpms. Speed doesn't really matter.
I was always told to break a motor in with short hard runs. Let it cool down after wards and that would help seat the rings. Other than that to drive normal and don't free rev it real hard or run it to the rev limiter or at high rpm's for extended periods.

I'm sure someone else will have some better insight on this though.

Will do hybrid!

heydockyle - I guess that's what I meant lol. I found a state highway that I'll take instead of US-96 and 69. Should let me have lower rpm and ocillate them more w/o looking like a retard.

Here's some pics!
Painted battery tray. I need to paint the bracket off the transmount sometime too.
Image

Intake. Haven't put the CAI back on yet.
Image

Painted radiator brackets
Image

Sprayed engine mount bracket. Looks tons better. New oil cap too.
Image

Lets not forget the load of sap on my car from sitting under a pine tree for 3weeks
Image

Just for fun. I made this out of a button I saw at work

We all know the big change is on the inside though lol.

She made the trip to school great. No problems at all. I need to reprogram my butterfly switches though. I think they lost memory after being unplugged for 3 months. Also, the alternator belt needs tightening. After another 200 miles I'll change the oil too.

NickKo - Yup! I still can't believe I did all that. I was so freakin exhausted this weekend.

Crystal - Well thanks! Getting that sap off was a real pain in the ass. there's still some residue, but most of its gone.

Speeder -

Chris - Hell yeah!
