Still need to locate a place close by to work on her. I did get the keepers and retainer in the mail finally. Also got the gaskets and valve seals.
Image

Still up in the air if I want to do Crane springs or not.

I have been working on the strip down a little lately. Took out about 50% of the wiring harness from the rear half. Carpet is gone. Cut out the rear door panels. Probably going to work on the asphalt deadening next.

Lastly, I'm going to clean up the casting flaws and port my turbo manifold some more. I don't want to have a lip between the head and manifold.

UPDATE: 2/20/11
Here's a pic of how she looks back with the coons. I'll probably be taking the tint off the fogs and side markers now.
Image

Was able to start the tear down today. I would have had the head off, but I left my 12pt sockets for the arp studs at work. I was able to nail down what the problem was though. When I had taken off the valve cover before, I was convinced it was a problem with the exhaust valves and not the intake, so I didn't even remove the intake rockers. Well, if I had, I would have seen this...

Image
Image

One of the intake valves in cylinder one was super bent.
Image

I'm not sure if the valve contacted the piston first, or if it broke at the retainer and dropped, but either way, it was F'ed up. Royally.

This is pretty much where I stopped, except i removed the heater core lines.
Image

Auxillary things I'll be doing besides getting the head fixed
1. Looping heater core lines
2. Removing PS lines back to rack and looping.
3. Machining enging mount bracket to remove tensioner and PS mount points.
4. Remove excess engine bay wiring and gut even more.

You have the worst luck dude, I'm so sorry lol.

But love how you just keep your head up and keep on going. This is definitely one of my favorite logs Chad, awesome.

Jesse - it crossed my mind to throw on a DOHC head, but it would would be a pain getting new cams and manifolds. Not to mention plug wires.

Steven - I know dude, I've had some crazy luck with this car. It has forced me to learn a lot though. I'm just hoping there is no piston damage. Not really sure how forged pistons fare compared to oem vs. the valves.

I'll have to admit though, I have been browsing the car market some these past few weeks.

Hmm....you guys may be on to something...lol

Mission success! Well, I managed to pull the head, and..... The doctor says she's gunna make it! hehe, there was some minor marking on piston #1, but the cylinder walls and combustion chamber look okay. Gunna smooth out the piston marks and it should be fine!

Now to get some quotes on valve jobs. Forgot to bring my camera with me so no pics for now.

Head is now stripped down.

Going to bring it to a local head rebuilder tomorrow. He'll be able to get to it sometime next week. This guy seems to know his stuff!

Oh, went ahead and ordered crane springs today too, just to be sure the mags weren't floating when I was getting close to 8k.

Yeah....lol.

Luis is coming over today. Maybe i'll give it to him. I heard he likes limp stems!

So we're looking at a timeline of next Friday for the head to be done. Machinist is going to order some valve guides, since that valve's one is for sure cracked.

Looks like we are going with a 5-7 angle intake job and a 3 angle exhaust with a curved exit for flow.

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen anybody turn a valve into a children's slide before. Kudos?

Just got back from my business trip. The Crane springs are here! These things are beefy. These should eliminate any float issues I was having.

compared to Mag springs.

Beast mode, sucks about the rebuild. Hopefully shit stays together this time.

Im lazy to go back and read but what caused this?

by ZeroChad
Yeah, no kidding.

Well, it happened when I had to put in a gallon of 93 to get to my e85 station. It seemed to be running okay on it though. When I got to the station, I noticed the huge missfire (running on 3 cyl).

After doing some research, I'm thinking the valve just conveniently failed. It turns out, other people have had them break in the same spot when running the comp 400 in a mag head.

Nice looking springs! Where did you get them from?

I'm a little behind on your build.....
Got my indy valves in today. 1mm oversized. I originally ordered the triple groove keeper style, and afterwards read that single groove style keeper setup is better at keeping the valve and spring from rotating. Turns out they sent me the single groove ones by mistake so it worked out!
They get them from the same supplier as I did when I was selling them for $206 shipped. The single groove style is recommended as the triple groove allows the valve to rotate and help prevent carbon buildup. The single groove is better for high performance applications as it seals better in the head. The single groove style is also what was used on 1gn SOHC engines....these are what I have in my head with 1GN keepers/retainers and Magnum springs. They work great under boost and have seen a few 8400rpm blasts without any issues. They are also a 1 piece valve Vs our OEM 3 piece valves so there stronger and lighter too...

Kezzo - Modern Performance. They actually had them in stock, unlike eveywhere else.

Chris - I'm pretty excited to try out the single keeper valves. How high did yo push your engine with the triple style? After talking about it on the other org, I'm confident the valve just failed, and that was my problem. It broke right at the bottom groove. The triple groove valve just aren't as strong.

Head will be done Tuesday! w00t!

Triple groove valve is also a 3 piece unit, the tip or where the keeper sits is actually fused to the stem just below the 3rd lock ring and as bent as your valve was I'm surprised the head of the valve did not snap at the stem as that where that piece is fused together. My stock valves on a Crane #14 would hit around 7200-7400rpm before they would float. My SS valves have seen 8500rpm without a glitch.
