..and a lot of time. I decided not to do mine since I heard it makes the car even louder from 2 locals. Its like 30lbs though I believe.

Dry ice seems like it'll take longer. Heat will make the asphalt more pliable and easier to scrape up whereas cold will make it more difficult to deal with...

And yeah, that shit is HEAVY as hell. For a race car like Grrrtrude it's worth it though as every pound helps...

Dry ice makes it hard as hell, and then you can just smack it with a hammer and it comes right out. I heard about a Michigan guy just waiting until it got really cold outside, and then just going out and doing work with a hammer.

There's more than one way to do it! I plan on doing it to my NYG sooner or later. Then re-installing the carpet lol.

One of these new 45mm BEP wastegates is now in Grrtrude. It's no taller than the old 38mm, but loads better. It's a shame such a pretty piece of art has to be stuck behind the motor and under the turbo.

We pulled all the sound deadener off the floor of our 1st gen race car and used the dry ice method.

So much easier, cleaner and faster than a heat gun / torch and a scraper.

We bought a bag and poured it on the floor and let it sit for about 5 minutes then shoveled a bunch to the other side of the car and used a rubber mallet and hit the stuff and it cracked off and we just vacuumed it all up.

We weighed it and got 37lbs out of the first gen.

is it just for sound debtening?

yes cody sound is very costly... "deadening"

but seriously, i think it also helps insulate a bit so the cold doesnt come up through the floor as easily

Well, now it's sprayed, so it's all the same color. It looks perfectly fine now.

OK, exhaust manifold is ceramic coated, the manifold with wastegate, dump tube, exhaust housing, etc are all bolted up. Had to time the motor again. It was off a tooth since I didn't do it on the stand. Looks like it's getting pretty close to running.

Yes. I can't wait. I bet you can't either.

Just remember when setting up the timing, the crank arrows do not line up. If you line up the arrows the crank will be retarded aprox 2 degree's.
Image
For anyone who is setting there timing belt, do not line up the arrows, the arrow on the oil pump has to lign up with the edge of the groove on the crank pulley and the crank arrow has to be offset from the arrow on the oil pump, this is true TDC as I found out this weekend...
Image
Image
When you use the crank markings, crank to oil pump, the crank is aproximately 2 1/2 deg retarded or 2 1/2 thousands below TDC......

Yea, I got it. With a DOHC there are more things to worry about as well. I made a tool for the cam locators, since the timing marks are on the tooth but the true location is in the valley on the cam gear.

The problem I had is that the engine and trans were laying on a tire when I threw the timing belt on and I couldn't turn the motor to verify.

At this point it is just little odds and ends that are necessary to get it all done. I need to grab a voltage regulator, blow off valve, some more boost piping, and some wire. I'll eventually need to put a speedo in it though.

I'm getting together the odds and ends to finish it back up. I got the boost piping in yesterday. I'm redoing all the piping since the piping before was 2.25".

Anyone got a line on lots of automotive grade wire for cheap? I need a lot of 16-18 gauge in a bunch of colors.

Yea, I'm getting ripped off... Apparently 3.50 costs 5.25.

So I determined that with the 80mm TB, there are 2 different ways I can orient it on the manifold. One makes it go through the hood, and the other makes it go through the radiator. It's easier to change the radiator out to a shorter dual-pass like in an old VW than make a new hood. So that's what I'm going with.

Side advantages: Smaller fan, weighs less and draws less power. Moves radiator hoses away from the intake manifold to keep IATs down even lower.

Could be kind of cool to have an air scoop on the hood though.

Maybe, but it would be a hole with just the throttle cable showing. It would be the opposite of awesome.

Yup, that'd be pretty gay.

And I got the new TB set up how I want it on the IM and painted it. VHT wrinkle FTW!
