Hot damn... that is so awesome, I almost want to have sex with it. Except that I'm a pitcher, and would have to catch in that situation...

Very damn cool man, I can't wait to see how it looks in the car!

Thanks Sean :) I'm gonna wait and do it tomorrow...I didn't feel like putting up with how much of a bitch it is to remove the shifter. I got one of the booger bushings off and tried to take the cable clips out so I could remove the cables, but the damn things won't budge...I don't really have the appropriate tools at the moment.

I know, me either! It would have been done lastnight, but the damn shifter cable clips were giving me a bitch of a time, so I quit...didn't have time to tinker around with it that much. If I can use some tools from work, I may be able to get it installed tonight :)

It feels great, it looks great (minus the "woodgrain") and I'm just SOOO happy! I must say, Chuck did a wonderful job on this shifter! I would honestly like the throw a TAD bit longer, but it's fine. It's super short! LoL! I like it though...by far the best mod I've put in my car in a very long time! I just wish I would have waited a little while for the JonnyMopar cradle bushings in...cuz the console is quite a bitch to get on/off with that tall-ass shifter! LoL! I'll get them in eventually.

BTW...if anyone is interested in the old shifter, it's gonna be up for sale within a few minutes, along with a few other goodies.

looks great, are you going to wrap it in the silver material like on your seats?

Posted: Wed Oct 22, 2008 9:52 pm
by supertrick_05
Possibly, but I'd rather wrap it in my dark slate leather...thing is, I think the leather will be too thick and may have to send it out to get scived (shaved). Either way, the handles will be wrapped in something.

Shifter looks good in there, Brodie! Can't wait to see what you come up with for the boot. Remember my Velcro idea - you could also go with a hidden zipper, too.

Looks awesome!

Not to get off topic, but is that an Alpine ida x-100, or a different model?

Can't say I'm a fan of that shifter in the slightest. Just looks like it'd be a pain in the ass to use on a daily basis.

Here's an idea what I have for the boot though. It's going to be REALLY damn hard to explain, but bare with me...

What you can do, is make the top portion of the boot JUST large enough to fit over that handle, but make sure it's hemmed down and can fit a zip-tie through it.

Slid said boot over shifter.
Flip the bottom portion of the boot up, slid the zip tie through the hem, fasten, and then clip the extra length.
Flip the boot back down
Enjoy snug, stock-looking shift boot.

It's what the cobalt owners have to do when getting a STS.

I keep playing the process over in my head and it should work out, no?

Thanks guys! Yeah, it's an awesome shifter. The grip is almost perfectly placed! It's very comfortable to shift. Only drawback is, it's in the way of my knob on the head unit, but that's okay with me. I can work around it.

Josh, that was an idea that I've been thinking about already...but I'm glad that someone else is thinking outside the box :) I have a few other ideas, but that one is stickin with me.

Anyways, I have already started on modding the grip. I've got one side of the handle wrapped in color-matched vinyl. Why vinyl you ask? Because with the contours of the driver's side handle, it has to have lots of stretch and as thin of material as I can get. Leather is usually thicker than vinyl, and not as stretchy. Anyways, it turned out very well, but I'm gonna do it over and work out a few tiny little details that nobody else but me would notice...LoL! Here's a few pics I snapped for y'all...

And I also recieved the JonnyMopar craddle bushings today...thanks for the quick shippin bud! I may yet install them tonight...because there's quite a bit of play with those rubber bushings. Thanks for lookin!

Oh damn, that shifter gets cooler and cooler! I didn't think it was possible, but sure enough, it is... Definitely gotta get that sticker on the top done up right though, that kind of kills it.

Oh... I'm assuming leather wrapping the steering wheel is up next? Looks really out of place now, in addition to it being the ugliest wheel Dodge has made in recent memory.

Thanks Sean! Yeah, the wheel will be done over the course of winter. You think the 03-05 wheel is the ugliest steering wheel for the Neons? Hells no! The ones before ours are fucking hideous! The ones we have look like the Viper steering wheel, which is a good looking wheel I must say.

I would have done the handles in leather, but i'd have to get the leather scived, and I don't know how much that will be. I may send some of my leather out with the next shipment we make to get scived. My co-worker just sent some leather to get scived about a month ago, so it'll be awhile.

Yup, it's an ugly wheel, IMHO. I liked the previous Neon wheel a little better, but not much.

I got the other side wrapped in vinyl, and WOW! I fuckin love it! My co-worker said that she would have liked to see it in the silver carbon stuff, cuz she liked my old shift knob...but with the chrome handle, I think it would have been too much. The dark slate vinyl gives it a more modern look than the original "woodgrain" plastic shit. I really like it! I would have screwed around with making a boot today, but unfortunately I forgot my silver thread at home, so I couldn't...but it will be done next week sometime I hope. Here's a few pics of the completed grip:

I also think I'm going to redo my armrest in the dark slate leather on top with the dark slate vinyl on the sides and double stitch in silver running down each side, from front to back. The door panel accent pieces will be carbon silver when I have time to take the doors off and such. I'd like to get the rest of the interior done before I start that.

I'm not a fan of the shifter itself (although I love the originality of it), but it looks incredible wrapped in vinyl! Great job man

Thanks Dante! I just installed the JonnyMopar solid cradle bushings, but the bolts aren't all the way tight...I need a deep socket now, so I'm gonna run to Menards (equivelant to Home Depot, but better IMO) and buy a deep socket set.

Damn... if Dodge puts one of those in a new car, that is EXACTLY how it should look! Very nice work my friend. It's like you do this for a living or something!
