that bumper looks awsome, i hate the plain design bumper. but with that lip it looks perfect. and with the grey the surrounds look great

ok so this morning, i took the car out, and ive been having some issues lately keeping the car running, i thought it was a bad ground for the sub/amp, so i disconnected it, and recharged the battery and havent had problems since(although i only drove it for a half hour last night and a few quick trips since the battery was charged).

so heres the story
basically i started the car this morning, let it run for a half hour, and then started to drive it to work(karli pointed out that it smelled like some sort of burning rubber), unfortunatley i only made it to the end of the road, and as i started to pull out of my street, the car died on me and i lost all power. i was able to push the car down the street a little and by then it seemed to be that i had some power, but not enought to start the car. then i was lucky enough to have someone give me a jump start, where i noticed the little plastic cover over the positive terminal seemed to have melted a bit(explaining the plastic smell)
i also at this point noticed that the positive terminal seemed to have some sort of washer or shims on them, and the terminal didnt seem to be on the battery too well
regardless i was able to drive the car back to my house and take karlis car to work, however if i dont get this issue resolved and fixed completely, i wont be attending the RI meet this saturday

the first instance where the car wouldnt start, was the night i hooked up my new headlights(wired in the halos and led's) and hooked up my 1000w amp, so maybe i have a bad ground wire somewhere when i wired the lights and this is causing my battery to drain?

the only other thing i can think of is maybe the alternator is shot

my plan of action for the night is going to be to disconnect the headlights, and see if the problem stops, and also to take the two batteries i have down to auto zone to see if they can be tested and see if anything is wrong with either of them

also im probably going to recharge one of those batteries(provided theyre good) and try to get friday off from work to swap the alternator and try to remove and put in new battery cables

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
thanks

Code: Select all

and the terminal didnt seem to be on the battery too well
Well that could be your problem, especially if you're pushing hefty audio hardware.

Test the battery with a multimeter when the car is off, see how many volts you have. Then start the car....if the battery has under 13 volts while running, it's a sign the alternator is gone. The burnt smell could also be the windings in the alternator.

ill have to charge up the battery and do that
but for now im pretty sure its the alternator
the car died on me a bunch of times and the battery always seems to be dead, so that points to dead alternator to me

im gonna bring the two batteries i have to be tested tomorrow and then ill see about getting work off friday to swap alternators

Could be your battery overcharging mine did this a few weeks ago, but not to the extent of it melting stuff, just died. Turns out I had a bad terminal, and some how that was causing it to over charge.

If it died while it was running then you are more than likely correct in thinking it's the alternator. You haven't changed it out yet?

yes i know i deserve it
good news, had the battery i bought from asanti tested yesterday(the one i was running when the car died) and it was completely dead the other day, asnd when they tested it last night it was at 12.5 volts and all was good, i didnt recharge it or anything, so i threw it in the car this morning and got the car to move into the driveway
ive got the whole day off so the plan of action is to pull the wheel off and start going at the alternator

wish me luck!

ok so im having the worst time trying to get this done, the haynes book i have says to jack the car up and pull the pass side tire, then work under the car, and i dont really feel comftorable working on the car with it on the jack, and i have no jackstands, so would it be a better idea to take the front bumper off and leave the wheel on, and drive the car up onto some ramps to get under the car?
any help would be amazing

you could do that ( the ramp) but to fully access the alternator the easy way would to remove the wheel and the inner liner to access the belt side of the car. No one by you has some stands you could barrow. Autozone might be able to rent you our some stands ( not totally sure though)

Get some jackstands. :tard: Like $15 a set.
When I changed out my alt belt on a lift... I had the wheel off, and taking off the splash shield wheel well thingy helped a ton.. Not sure if its possible to do it your way...

Good luck though. :)

Previous owner had shims on the battery? Thats pretty ghetto. Get a new OEM clamp for the battery, don't half ass stuff with shims or whatever the hell was on your battery.

I would definately recommend grabbing some jackstands at autozone. I would not trust my life to some ramps.

Nope, no shims on the batt. I gave him. I always used felt pads to keep the posts from corroding. Besides:

basically my ground for my stereo was in a bad spot, and my 4guage wiring, which the amp wiring kit packaging said was good for 1000watts, isnt, so until i can upgrade my wiring , i will have no sub, no big deal
