Srtgtr34's 2000 neon: Mag goodies

So I have been on this site for a little while now, and made a couple small project threads but now I just want one single thread to show the cars progress.

I bought the car back in may of 07, to be my first car. When I first got the car it looked like this:

Image

I didn't start driving the car until june of the following year and inbetween that time I added the halo projectors to replace the foggy headlights and a black srt spoiler to break up the plain looks of the rear.

That summer I picked up a set of srt wheels and shortly after I refinished them, similar to what they were a couple months ago.

I sold the 18's to get new tires for the 17's and got 2 winter tires for that winter. That fall into winter, I went a little to crazy with lighting mods and practically did all the led and lighting mods. The next spring the wheel got redone again and nothing really major got done to the car. That summer, another strut went so I bought some tokico blues and had them installed in march, very pleased with the product, I do recomend them highly. That summer I finally tinted the altezzas, I hated the chrome as much as everyone else.

Over the past couple months, The only mod that I did was the srt rear brake conversion and I bought two more winter wheels with tires and pretty much just drove the car. The only project that is currently being worked on is the srt wheels which won't be done for about another month and a half.

I used to have major plans for this car, but I don't see any sense in modding it any more. Why should I dump thousands into a car to make it a little faster when I can buy a better car overall. Ever since I was a kid in school I was obsessed with the srt4 and up until the fall I really wanted one, but I have lost interest in them and decided I want to get a nicer car. (awd turbo)

The car will be getting some major things done in the coming months before I go away in early july. Many things will be getting replaced by then such as the Timing belt, drive belts, gaskets and some sensors. I am basically trying to make this car as reliable as possible for college.

The other major issue right now is the exterior. The pain all started when I removed those dammed side moldings. They took a bunch a paint with them and left a whitish line on my door which was clearly visable. I decided to repaint the door about a month later using the extra paint from the interior panels and I completely forgot that I mixed the vivid version of the color instead of the prime version. After pulling of the tape I noticed just how different the two versions were, a couple days later I began to resand the whole door and I eventually lost interest.

This is how bad it looked:

Image

These past couple weeks, with the nice days we have been having in the upper forties, I've spent some time outside sanding more and more and I finally got down to the original paint. Unfortaunately before I painted the door I sanded down to the primer in some spots so right now I'm rolling around with a dull door with primer spots, its sucks alot...

I have decided that I will be painting the car, but not the whole car.
The front fender will finally be replaced with a new one and the spoiler will be coming off hopefully in its place will be a molded lip spoiler. Basically everything but the hood, front bumper and passenger side fender will be getting repainted. I will probly be using some mid grade paint like omni or similar and the vibrant clear will go over it since its still sitting right next to me. I really don't know when the car will be getting painted but It will be before july, I will be painting it myself, so I will be saving a ton on labor. The timing belt components will be being purchased with the upcoming refund checks and will probly be installed some time in march.
I am not painting the hood because its shot an to be truthful, I don't have money for another one and the front bumper is cracked below the passenger side headlight, I may get another hood and bumper in the future but its just not that important right now.

I had plans in converting the rear end of the car to 03+ but I'm going to be scrapping those plans. Tinted tail lights and the led boards will be up for sale soon along with that black srt spoiler.

Kinda lsp, I have decided it would be worth while to spend my money elsewhere.

Well I'm not really looking at a specific car yet, But I got the model picked out, I bet most people wouldn't even think about it, but I love em. Hint they are called Liberty else where around the world.

Its hard to say when I'd pick up another car, since I'm going away for college, soI really won't have a stable job since I'll be coming back in only 18 months.

Yup, if everything works out, I want a loaded 05lgt.

I drove a 5spd a week before christmas and I loved it, sure the handling isn't as good as the neon's but it's a total sleeper, with low(ish) insurance rates!!

Plus, I could use a little more space inside the car, kinda sucks being tall in a neon.

I have a friend with an LGT, they're very refined and can be damned fast with some of the tunes available. Nice cars :)

Well I'll have a couple new mods coming in the next couple weeks.

Magnum intake manifold and possibly a magnum aem Cai.

    Just waiting on the cai..

I want to polish the manifold and clear coat it just like my wheels and paint the cai salsa red.

I am also looking into doing the mustang tb mod, but I'm still looking for more information about it.

Although it could be awhile before I install the goodies. :(

I never said I was done. With my tax money, I have decided to fix up the car a bit and get it ready for college.

Its just a couple small mods, plus with the parts I'll be selling soon, I'll break even.

I do want to get he legacy, but I can't tell exactly when that could be, since I don't know of the job situation in ohio. A couple stars have to align for this to happen before next year..

I have a Legacy GT. They are sweet cars but can be fragile be carfull when you buy one!

The are awsome in the winter thought atleast here in Canada!!

All Subies are fragile when it comes to modding, they need to be done right :D

    lol of course!

but they also have weak transmission (some execptions) and there have been problems with the WRX 2.0 eating bearings.

But I love my car and the sound of the Boxer under the hood!

My friend's 05 LGT just blew the transmission and clutch all at once...randomly. Started making shitty noises one week, the next week it blew to pieces.

Way to make me feel uneasy about buying one....

In all honesty, I would love to get the spec b, with the sti 6spd, before they went to the I- drive feature, so an 07.. I believe.. It really depends on my situation a year from now though.

In other news, the intake mani and aem cai are on the way.

The spoiler is getting taken off next week, yay. In about a month I'll be getting a fiberglass lip spoiler, hopefully.

I am also looking into getting a mag valve cover. If I do find one I'm going to get it pc'd along with the cai, as close to salsa red as possible.

I am also thinking about black out the rear deck lid (gloss black), when I'm done molding the lip spoiler.

    60mm mustang tb is inbound.

In other news, a bearing failed in one of the paint booth's air ducts, so the spoiler will get to spend a little bit more time with my car.

I got the magnum mani earlier today, looks good.. Will look even better in a month.

    Image

The car also got cleaned for the first time since early november. :laughing3:

    Image

This will also be the last picture that the car will have with the wing still attached.

It would have been off last week, but our paint booth broke on us, but everythings good now.

It will be painted solar yellow and it will make its journey to florida to its new owner..

I got all my parts in yesterday.

    Image

The valve cover and the cai will be salsa red. I'm going to a local powder coating shop later this week to see how much they charge and if they can color match their powder. If the price is reasonable I will P.C. them if not, I can paint them for free. Either way the raised 2.0L part will be polished.

The mustang 60mm tb will be my project for the next couple weeks as I modify it to work with our sensors and throttle cable.

As I stated before the mag mani will be polished on the outside then cleared to protect the shine. I will also be buying a porting bit since they aren't too much money. The inlet will be ported maybe another 1.5/10ths of an inch to lessen the gap between the tb and the mani, I'm shooting for around 55, 56mm. I also want to port the main runners on the mani, but only on the bottom of the mani for now, since porting the top would do nothing for me, at least with the standard head. I am also going to be polishing the inside of the mani as much as I can.

I will also be doing some work on the injector cover. I will be smoothing it out and painting it salsa red. I have a new vinyl coming for it which will be placed on it then cleared over to protect it.

The wheels are doing great, despit my slow progress they should be done just in time to put them on the car.

The other 2 wheels are prepped and are just awaiting some paint. I should have them sprayed by friday, weather pending.

The other two are almost ready to have the aluminum cleared, I'm just waiting for some of my 3m D.A. pads to come in to finish off the metal.

The spoiler is finally off the car.

I brought the car to school on tuesday and completely filled the wholes for the trunk.

Unfortunately, due to the bad weather from last week, I finally got internet back today.

    Now with the good news...

At first I was just going to fiberglass over the holes in the trunk, but then I thought to myself, there is a high possibility of the fiberglass cracking, so I decided to weld the holes.

I had cut out four tiny square out of 22 gauge sheet metal and clamped them on the underside of the trunk. I then tacked the small plates in and began to fill them with metal. I got as much metal as I could in there but as you can see, there are some holes.

    Image

    Image

I then proceded to apply a very thin layer of fiberglass to fill in the tiny holes in the metal, and DA'ed it 180 until smooth.

Next I feather edged around the four holes and layed down a good coat of icing.

    Image

    Image

I block sanded the icing with 180 grit and got a smooth surface that was ready for primer. The first coat of primer was a SEM acid etch primer followed by two coats of a 2k high build epoxy primer.

Here is what I ended up with:

    Image

    Image

Its kinda nice to be able to see out my whole rear window.

WIth the wing gone, the exhaust sticks out alot more and I can notice a difference in the crosswinds, defineately less sway with the wing.

The spoiler will have the two primer spots for a bit until I find time to paint the car.

The molded lip spoiler is coming soon.

I went outside this mourning to warm the car up and when I looked out my back window I saw all white. At first I thought it was just some frost, but then I looked at the window from the ouside and saw all the cracks. The glass is completely shattered, it looks like the tint is the only thing holding it together right now.

I pretty sure I know why it shattered. Some of the splatter from welding the spoiler holes, got on the glass and chipped it, but they weren't deep chips. The shop owner even said he never seen chips from welding causeing glass to crack so bad.

The hunt is on for a new rear window now, i found one local for 115 but I would still have to find someone to install it, soon.

I don't have glass coverage so its all coming out of my pocket for right now.

I'll try to get some pics later if the glass is still intact when I get home.
