Todd/2001 Neon SE

Post by red2.4srt » Mon Mar 01, 2010 3:18 pm

So we got my girlfriend a 2001 Neon for free, previous owner stating it wouldn't start. I started off with a battery for it and voilà, she fired right up! With only 90,355 miles on the clock, this little 2.0 SOHC has plenty of life left in her!

Image

Shortly after the car made it home and I got to take a good look at it, I knew I was in for some work. The previous owner mentioned that her ex-fiancee hit U-Haul van with the car, but she didn't elaborate on how hard he hit it. I found out how hard. I removed the junked hood, front fenders, front bumper, and headlights to find a nice little surprise... The radiator was busted, the transmission was leaking and there was probably 1/3rd of the intake system left that hadn't sustained damage. Great. I started off by swapping the fenders out to feel out how far out of wack everything was, and it didn't seem too bad at first, then I put the new hood on and I realized how fucked I was. The hood latch hook missed the latch assembly and the hole in the upper rad support by almost 2". Now, i'm not new to using my "homemade body shop parts", so I enlisted my fathers help along with his F-250 SuperDuty, and 2 cable Come-a-Longs. Come-a-Longs are essentially like a regular ratchet strap, but made of cable and with a 2' handle on them also including 2 heavy duty hooks at either end. We hooked the lower rad support and pulled roughly 6"-7" out then hooked the top rad support and did the same. It wasn't that fast by any means, but who likes a drawn out story... LMAO. With that said and done, I moved onto putting the new '02 bumper on the car and voila!, a brand new looking car appeared! Here's shortly after it arrived home, mocked up '02 bumper and a long way to go... Blurry pic is horrible, but so was the car at this point. A clearer pic wouldn't have looked much better. LOL.

Image

After all the body panels were on, we moved onto the mechanical end of things. I swapped out a new radiator and fluid, oil and a filter, a new battery and checked the trans fluid to see how much fluid leaked out of the casing. I got curious and found out why the trans was leaking, apparently 4 or 5 bolts at the low end of the pan were finger tight, if that... Thank god. I'm going to put more fluid in this weekend most likely as the car sits and has no plate as of now. Heres after the body panels and a wash. Huge difference!

That week we ordered some black housing headlights to put on and an idea struck me. As most of you know, I have BC Coilovers on my car and my factory SRT struts and Goldline lowering springs lay dormant in my shed for quite some time now. Never has there been a more perfect oppurtunity to clear my shed(which makes my Dad a happy guy!) of parts! I swapped the suspension onto the car in roughly an hour and 15 minutes (i'm government certified in strut swapping!) and it looked so much better already! First pics are stock height and new headlights, pics with my car are lowered. (It actually was lower overall than my car due to the 14" steelies)

I got curious and wanted to see how my SRT alloys would look on it so I swapped one side on quick.

Image

Ew. Tires are wayyyyy too big, so scratch that idea... I then saw a GTI in Giant's parking lot with some Beetle Steelies painted black with a red lip and I thought, "Damn, I could do that!", and I did. See the next post...

As for where we are now, here's an update and some pics...

Well, since the Legacy GT mesh wheels we wanted wouldn't fit, I found a set of Beetle steel wheels for cheap and got them instead. They're 16x6.5" with a +42 offset and I mounted some 205/50R16 tires on there which should fill up the fender well without being too big like my SRT wheels. They fit great and don't rub anywhere! Now onto some pics...

Image

Image

She wanted them painted so I said no problem. I redid them in satin black, then put a purple lip on them for her. She loves it and it's kinda growing on me.

NEW PICS! Her Purple lugnuts showed up last week and I got around to installing the wheels on. Plus, I picked up a 99-00 Si Type R lip for the front end. Hoping to install that soon and I'm on the hunt for some R/T sideskirts(like everyone else is!)

I tried to convince her to get the EDM Chrysler Grille, but to no avail, she wasn't into it. Damn. LOL.

More to come...

Fixed the non working radiator fan and also changed the front pads tonight as the car is going for PA State inspection on Thursday. I need replacement rotors before then, these are far gone. I got a hookup on two new rotors through my father for 18.75$ each. She's not tracking this beast, so they'll do. LOL!

Here's a few pics from the other night when I did the radiator fan and front brake pads. No pics of progress, but more pics of the car(s).

And mine up in the air for an oil change. I love the suspension travel on coilovers. LOL.

LOL! I use jackstands, it's stupid not to, I just wanted to illustrate how little suspension travel there is with coilovers. It'd be kinda hard to drain the oil like that anyways, sorry I worded that wrong.

:beatstick: I guessed you worded that wrong, but yeah love the coilovers. On a side note we had an idiot in town who did something like that. Jack gave out and car fell on him. Didn't kill him but broke 3 ribs. Gotta love the stupidity. lol

Thanks for the feedback! The car passed Pa state inspection and emissions, needing only a new O2 sensor to pass. Not too shabby considering the state it was in 6 months ago.

Adam, tell him to stop up and ask for me, i'll hook him up.

I'm going to get some better than iPhone quality pics of this thing soon, I promise.

Just to show you guys what the car came from, here's the first pics of it when we got the damaged parts off.

Image

Image

Here's some from today, made a junkyard run and got the owners manual, a new trunk gasket, new window cranks (previous owner thought epoxying the original ones on... Yep.) and a logo for the front bumper. I also installed my OEM SRT midsection and rear section on her car and I debadged, wetsanded, and buffed the areas. Now for pics!

Back from the dead! Here she is as she sets today! I picked up a full set of SRT sideskirts for it, just need a rear lip and were golden. Also added an SXT spoiler for her as she wanted one for quite some time now.

Yeah, LOL! I'd be stupid to paint it now though, without waiting to get all the pieces for the lip kit. We only need the rear lip, then it's all getting sprayed at the same time. Don't worry, the GF has been bugging me to get it painted too! Hahahaha! It'll look so much better when it's all painted up though.
