Took the head to a machine shop today.
$65 for a mill and jet wash
I'm ready to rock and roll again!
Picked up some lapping compound on the way home.
Going to lap the valves and change the seals tomorrow.
Hopefully the short block comes tomorrow too or i'm gonna have to wait until Monday :/

Neither can I ^.^
So...how do I remove the valve springs?
My friend's universal spring compressor is no good. Their isn't enough room for the spring jaws :/
And Rich's compressor is a gigantic pneumatic press that takes two people.

I remember having a plastic driver type thing that you would just hit with a hammer and the keepers would just fall out. But that wont help you get them back in... But it would get them out if you can get one and in the meantime you can try and find a proper one

That's actually exactly what i'm doing!
I'm gonna use the hammer method to get them out.
And then I finally got a tool that will help me put them back in.

Didn't get nearly as much done this weekend as i'd hoped for :/
Short block didn't come, so I found myself stripping the nasty green valve cover and intake manifold.
Repainting them something NOT green before putting them back on.
Got the valves out no problem. Before putting new seals in, Rich brought his mic over and looked at the guides. There's a little bit more clearance than there should be. So...since the heads already off and it's going to be getting new seals, i'm just going to have new guides installed. Or at least have some brass sleeves put in. I guess i'll pick up new valves while i'm at it x.x
At least now I know EVERYTHING will be new
Short block comes tomorrow, thankfully. And my motor mounts might come as well ^^
Ordered the timing belt kit through Modern, with a Gate's Racing belt. Picked up an MPx blow off plate and some booger booshings as well.
Eff me, this is getting expensive.
What else do I need? New head bolts, exhaust and intake manifold gaskets...and...new...something. I'll remember later.

OKAY!
I need some suggestions ASAP.
Guides are getting pressed tomorrow. The shop is getting me guides for $1.99 each.
But I also need valves.
They said exhaust valves are $10 and intake valves are $14. That's per valve.
I've tried Googling, and i'm not getting many results for valves.
Are those good prices? MPx has some REV valves for about the same price, but they're oversized.
But i'm not finding many others. Can I get a better deal somewhere else? Or should I just have them pick up the valves for me?
And while i'm at, i'm just going to get new springs as well. Fuck it. I'm so close to having a brand new head, i'm just gonna do it all. Can I run Crower springs with stock cams? I may wanna upgrade cams later without having to mess with the valve springs again.

Ya. I have clearance. Lots of it O:
Guides were worn. And valve stems were starting to show signs of it as well.
I'm already this far, I may as well go all the way you know?

Me too, Gramps! I get to start over at 0.
2005 SRT? Please. 2011 SRT!
Got some goodies from BWoody!
Can't wait to feel the vibrations
Also, because I didn't have my short block over the weekend, I had some extra time to paint things!
Valve cover and intake manifold are in primer right now >:3

I have the same issue with the exhaust valve guides and now it's at the machine shop. (was going to port the head but they wanted to charge 400 for it)
About the valves, I shopped around too for all new valves and it seems online is actually a bit more expensive. I got new exhaust valves that the machine shop ordered in (same brand as online - Mahle) and they were only $8 and some change for each. Online they are $16. I guess it all depends on who you go through to buy them.
Keep up the work. Getting excited to see it all.

Yes your can! You ain't getting what's inside though >:DNEON PARABOLA wrote:I can haz box?
Gramps, I've never seen a pallet this small! It's like a midget pallet. It's almost cute.
Mopar04, I asked the dealership and they wanted $18 for exhaust valves and $14 for intake valves. Springs were $4 :/
So i'm just going to have the machine shop order them from their guys, today.
The core charge for my old block is only $300. I'm pretty sure I can get more for it locally.
How much do you think my old block is worth? $500?
Pretty much an entire short block that just need to be overbored.

New timing belt, belt tensioner, idler bearing, water pump, booger bushings and blow-off plate
Waited too long deciding what valves to get O:
Now I won't have 'em until Tuesday >.<
Guess i'm spending this weekend painting again! XD
There isn't much I can do to the short block without the head.
I can always clean out the engine bay. There's some rust that needs to be cleaned up.

New hotness
Spent the day reassembling the old block and finished painting the intake manifold and valve cover >:3
Tomorrow i'll swap the blocks and put the new one on the stand.
What's the best way to put the crank gear back on? The Chrysler manual says to use a special tool...but Rich said I can just use a big deep socket and an impact hammer O.o

Well...definitely feels like things are going back together a lot slower than they came apart.
Got my crank timing gear installed! If you don't have a specialty tool then hit it with a hammer, RAWR!
As of right now, the new engine is on the stand, and the new water pump and belt tensioner are installed.
Painted lots of engine brackets and...various other engine things. There was a little rust here and there so I sand blasted 'em. I want everything going back on clean!

True story! I even installed the MPx blow off plate now cause I don't want to do it later when the turbo is in the carNEON PARABOLA wrote:NOW is the time to paint/clean/replace anything you may want to do in the future. once the block is back in, it will be 1000% tougher to get done.
If I could find a cheap 3" o2 housing i'd probably do that now as well. But I don't think it's worth the $90 for a new one.
I'm probably going to just redo the whole vacuum line system. I hear the stock lines are pretty poorly routed anyways.
Trying to think of anything and everything I can do right now. Painted valve cover and intake manifold. Solid motor mounts. Blow off plate. Timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler. Painted brackets. Any other suggestions?

It's so hard to find intake manifold bolts O.o
Will exhaust manifold bolts work just the same? Can I just get two sets?

Hmmm...choices.
I guess it would make my decision a little easier. I dunno whether to grind the letters or just leave them painted the same color as the rest of the vc.
