Passt's 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ - 1/5/14 Mucho updatos lol

Post by Passt » Thu Dec 01, 2011 3:17 pm

Hello everyone. I picked up this sexy beast as a daily driver / fun mobile. I figured I'd keep a progress log as I delve into this new territory.

2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2 door, 117k miles on the odo.

Forgive me for the lack of high quality photos. It was dark and I am lazy.

First thing I did to get her to pass MD state inspection was install new front rotors and pads, and new wheel joints (what a job >.<).

The next thing to do will be to fix the common speaker wiring issue that plagued this model Jeep. I'm running on 3 speakers right now, I can't have that! I also have a head unit ready to pop in as well.

Yea straight 6. I love it so far. It reminds me a little of my very first car, a 1987 Chevy Blazer, although that had the weaker 2.4, or 2.5 motor? This has a good bit more umph to it lol. Apparently I was lucky to find a 2 door. I've noticed a lot of Cherokees around MD, but all are 4.

Nice, the body is definitely holding up better than my '99. The only way you could get a 2 door was to order it from the factory. In 1999, I could only find 4 doors no matter what dealer I went to.

I have a homemade engine fan delete. It makes it much quieter not having that thing anymore. I fabbed a mount and have an electric fan with a Spal controller. You would be surprised how little the fan is actually needed, unless you are towing something.

I also have Warn locking hubs on it, which eliminates the "running water" sound of the front driveline constantly turning. My fuel mileage went from around 13mpg to 18/19.

Buying the warn locking hub kit now is very pricey. I got mine when they first came out with them, and were selling them at a promotional price. ($580ish) They are more than double that now.

Thanks for the info demons. I will look into the locking kit. I'd love to see a pic of your Jeeps as well.

Jckevns, mind tossing up a pic? I think I'm getting a lift for christmas lol, I'm trying to decide between the Rough Country 1.5" or a 3". Did you have to drop your transfer case with the 3"?

i'll get some pics tomorrow for yah. i dropped the transfer case, not sure if its a must with the 3" but i wanted to be safe.

3" is the smallest lift i would go with, in my opinion a 1.5 is just not worth the time and money. you won't notice much of a difference with a 1.5

check out this forum http://www.cherokeeforum.com/ lots of pics and info on cherokees

edit i forgot i had this pic on photobucket, hoping santa will be bringing my a set of bfgoodrich all terrain 31s

Nope a 4 speed atx :(

I do have some good news though. I finally checked my rear end (lol) and found out it is the Chrysler 8.25 and not the Dana 35.

Image

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01

Basically I got the beefier of the two rear axles offered. It's no Dana 44 or a Ford 8.8, but I'll take it. I won't be doing enough to test its limits anyway (hopefully).

Yes it is lol. Gas pedal instead of brake, or as I like to call it, DWOBW. I'll let you fill that in :p

Changed the front and rear differential fluid last night. The pic is the D30 up front. It's a 2000 so it's low pinion. Next on the list are the rear pinion seal and the oil pan gasket.

I suck at updating this. It's been a while. Since the last update I flushed the transmission and coolant, so the XJ has all new fluid.

Nice choice on the wheels. Simple but beefy. Jeep looks sooo much better

Thank you sir. I've learned so much already just from doing all the fluids and the lift. I love the Jeep, simple yet effective. She can certainly take some abuse. I also love owning a vehicle I'm not so anal about in terms of the exterior condition lol.

Back to the topic - Jeep looks mean!

Yea she ran over one of the huge metal street lamps, and the base of course didn't move. It literally ripped the entire bottom of the car off lol.

Sweet, you'll have a blast :)

I went wheeling over the weekend, and now the rear diff is leaking. Hopefully it's just the little rubber plug. I don't feel like taking the cover off, for the 3rd time lol.

Reminds me of seeing muscle cars in the early 70's with painted diff. covers (usually smiley faces or matching body color).

I'm only a year and a half late in posting this for you Gramps lol. That's my dog Mopar, he's a Carolina Dog (American Dingo).

Image

I haven't been around in a while. I'm going to update this thread over the next day or so. I hope all is well with everyone here. Stacey and I were very sad we couldn't make it to Carlisle in 2013, but it was a very busy year for us. We will be there this coming year :)

I got new front and rear bumpers from Nate's 4x4 (sweet name, I know).

Image

Image

On the Jeep. Oh, and I bought a 5 speed 4 door 1998 XJ as well.

Image

Shortly thereafter I decided I wanted more lift. I sold off my 3.5 inch IROR lift and bought a 6.5inch long arm lift from IROR.

Image

Cutting off the old lca brackets so the long arms would fit.
Image

Tatton rear driveshaft to go with the new lift.
Image

I bedlined the lower quarter all the way around the Jeep. I like the way it turned out.
Image

I then installed some KC floods up front.
