Is this lifter tick or what? *NEW VIDEOS*
Hey guys, I'm back...with an '01 R/T with lots of miles (194K). I made a lil video of how the engine sounds. I guess I'm not real familiar on how Neons sound when they're not in PERFECT RUNNING shape like my old one, but it seems to run good...just has that "tick" that makes it sound like a diesel. It actually runs very smooth, but it sounds like crap. I don't really know.
Also, here's another video of the acceleration under WOT...it's fighting to go, but just isn't there. It's not a clogged cat (had it tested) and it's not the air filter (just changed it for a new element). I don't really know what else it could be besides a fuel issue.

That's exactly what mine sounded like too!
Till I took it in, insisted that something was wrong. they dropped the oil pan, found metal shavings, got a new short block. no more sound.
It's hard to tell from a video though. Some camera mics are more sensitive to higher pitched/louder sounds. to me, it sounds REALLY loud and doesn't sound like lifters to me. sounds more like a bad case of piston slap or possible rod knockage.

Honestly, I think if I wasn't used to hearing this noise myself, I'd think it was something worse. However, the fact that it ticks to the exact same rhythm as my motor, I can tell that it's the same as mine. The mic from his camera just makes it sound louder than it actually is.
It's loud, but it's not as loud as a rod knock. Trust me, I KNOW rod knocks (not my own car, luckily ).
I think I should take mine in as well and have them check for the metal shavings lol
edit** Well, idk. I listened to it about 10 more times and... it sounds a little worse. I'm not too familiar with motor internals so I can't suggest what it might be and it does sound a LITTLE worse than mine. It ticks to the same rhythm as I said above, but it sounds like it ticks ... "harder"? or ...idk. Shit, now I'm worried about my car all over again smh lol. I HAVE had it "listened" to by my mechanic (a guy whose opinion I really trust) and he said it doesn't sound too bad and that he gets Neons that sound worse) so idk.
hmm...

Change the oil and fill it up with 5qts of oil (not the 4.5 the manual tells you). Start it and see if it sounds different. If it's lifter tick, most (if not all of it) should go away. If not, it's more than likely piston slap or rod knock (if it's really loud).
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

see, mine always stops after I get my oil changed. And it'll be gone for like a day or so. Then it comes back.
They always fill it with 4.5qts too. Didn't know it was safe to do more than that. Guess I'll give it a try.

I have always used 5 quarts, but that's me. Some people say that using an extra qt of oil will cause oil to come past the cam seals due to a rise in oil pressure, but I have never experienced that.
And like you, the lifter tick goes away for a few days after the oil change but then it's back. I've just come to accept it

lolz, I doubt an extra half quart of oil is going to make a difference in oil pressure. And if it did it would be less, due to aeration.

Ok cool, thanks guys and Cam I'll make another video today with my Flip and maybe it's mic will pick up the sound better. As long as its not knock and something I should be worried about, thats all I care about. Still...I should probably change the oil anyways...even tho it looks pretty fresh. Any certain oil for high mileage cars that anyone recommends? Im going to dump a can of RESTORE in it...I swear by that stuff, and I know a bunch of other people do.

yeah that's in the block. a local member just swapped in a new head and internals, no change in sound. still sounds like that, only slightly quieter.
wrist pins wear, and the pistons get sloppy. Seen it twice, both r/t motors interestingly, problem solved for both, after new blocks were installed. I'd check the lifters as well since its at lot easier, to be sure you have no issues there first, since its easy. But unfortunately i think its going to need a new block/rods/pistons.

Ive been drag racing mine for 2 years with that noise.
Swapped head with a low mileage 32k head/rocker/cam combo.
Noise didn't go away. It's bottom end.
Sounds like a diesel at drive throughs.
Ignore it till it blows.

But don't street race..!!??If the parts car is cleaner rust wise than your car, swap the inner dash panels (VIN) and use the parts car with your title.
