Part Number Request: Steering Rack Neon/ ACR/ SRT-4

Dante or BRR,

Could you please post the part numbers for the rack and pinion assemblies used on 2nd gen Neon's?

I'm looking for the standard rack, The 2001/2002 16:1 ACR rack, and the 18:1 SRT-4 rack. Did the R/T have it's own or did it share with the ACR?

Here you go. I included all second gens into the list for completion.

Codes used.

SBA = Standard steering
SBB = Firm Feel
SBP = Performance streering

2000

2001-2005 Non SRT (R/T and ACR use the same rack, code SBP)

It get confusing in later years because some 4sp cars use a different #, but the above list is the ones that really matter

*Note* These may not be the latest numbers since I can't check with Chrysler atm*

woot... i had heard somewhere that the 2001/2002 ACR -2001-2004 R/T had a quicker ratio rack han the SRT-4, and was currious. Will the "Chrysler ATM" give any info as far as ratio's, or am I going to have to trust the info I was given by someone "in the know"?

The R/T and ACR do have a faster ratio iirc. Chrysler doesn't list the ratios. (oh, and it's just Chrysler...the atm was at-the-moment

) I don't know the ratios for sure however.

The biggest difference in the SRT racks and the non SRT is that the SRT's have a limiter built into them for the larger wheel/tire combo. The R/T and ACR racks have a limiter as well, but not as much. It was put in because of the R/T's 16" wheels. It would be nice if the ACR had it's own rack (since it doesn't need the limiter) but Chrysler is ever the penny pincher

i ddin't catch the acronym for "ATM".... I just figured you were punching in info and it was spitting out ifo...similar to a bank ATM..... and it kinda fits after all.....

Unless The FSM is wrong, it would seem the standard Neons have the faster ratio....

Can some explain the difference between the ACR and R/t rack vs. the "firm feel" rack? I am trying to source a reman ACR rack, and the firm feel keeps coming up

I am looking at these trying to figure out if one is an acr r/t rack.

IIRC, the steering ratio is quicker in the R/T/ACR racks. There is also a limiter on that rack to limit the travel because of the larger 16" wheels on the R/T.

I got my reman rack from Chrysler years ago. They used A-1/Cardone as a rebuilder then.

sounds like it would be like something for a sports package if you will. Im just curious what it is

Exactly. It was the rack found in the ES/LX and later some SXT models. It might have been standard with the 15" alloy wheel packages.

1gn ACR and R/T have 16:1 ratio.

2gn ACR and R/T have 18:1 ratio. Firm Feel

The ratios are swapped between the 1gn and 2gn ACR and R/T. And the regular neons for that matter. The regular 1gn neons got the 18:1, while the regular 2gn's got 16:1

The 1gn's being the faster ratio for the ACR and R/T is another example of what was the rule, creating confusion with the 2gn line up.

I guess they deemed 16:1 too responsive with the better tire sizes offered for the 2gn R/T, ACR and the SRT. So they made the wheel harder to turn, and slowed the ratio down.

Now it all makes complete sense, thank you! I was pulling my hair out trying to figure this out today. So in reality, the "standard" steering rack is the fastest? this is going in my rallycross car, and I need steering response to be quick.

So in reality, the SBB and SBP rack codes are the same for 2001-2005?

and lastly, is it worth it then to get the "firm feel" rack? is there any performance gain going with an ACR or R/T rack?

I would stay away from the firm feel for rally racing. It is basically harder to turn, ie less power assist in the valving. I would think it would increase driver fatigue.

If you want even faster response the, Shelby Shadow rack is 14:1, but it will be firm feel. There are two shadow racks, one has longer travel. That is the one you would want, but you will need to modify the crossmember to use it. The wrong rack has 100 mm travel, the correct one is 129 mm.

Here is a link to my failed attempt, because I had the wrong one, but the basics of all else would apply to get it done as close to "anal correct" as possible.

The difference between the late '03 - up racks with the 40te ATX, is that there is no PS pressure switch hole. I am running that one, and just have the sensor plugged in, and tie wrapped out of the way. I really can't tell any difference with stalling issues from not having the IAC kick up the idle for low speed turns.
