For you, Frank
Its too bad you couldn't have just a mechanical switch to turn it on and off. I understand the problem is that u break load at 600volts (or w/e the motor runs at) and u get lots of spark but there are ways of arresting that. Personally I think toyota just took the easy way out and trusted their programing way to much. I am an EET and I would never trust software over a mechanical system.

Frank you say at 50, but was your foot on the gas at all? I think the car will shift into neutral no matter what the speed is. It's the throttle position that tells it not to.
Never thought I'd say this about a Prius, but If I was you i'd be afraid to drive that dam thing.

I did an experiment on the way home.
All I'll say is I am set if the car decides to take off.

Yeah, because domestic is so much better.
Apparently the Chevy Cobalt is having just as big of a problem with this except it isn't widely publicized. That is what I heard during the hearings with the President of Toyota.

I'm pretty sure if a cobalt had such a malfunction that there would be SOMETHING in the news about a chase.. not a run away car per say... but SOMETHING... you know what I be saying? lol

My understand was it is nearly an identical situation. I can't explain why it hasn't been plastered all over the news like the Toyota issue has, but that's just what one government official was asking the Chair of the NHTSA.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- An out-of-control Toyota was involved in a crash in Middletown Thursday afternoon, police said.
Police said the 2006 Camry lost control at Middlesex Health Care Center on Saybrook Road at about 1 p.m. They said the vehicle rolled over in the crash.
Witnesses told Eyewitness News that they heard the car's engine roaring prior to the crash.
Synthia Damotta was working when she heard what sounded like a car revving up before hearing the crash.
Damotta said, "We were at the car the second after it happened. The door wouldn't open. It was locked. They kicked the window out and got her out."
The car is among the Toyotas recently recalled. The cars pose the threat of unwanted acceleration, which led to the recall of more than 8 million cars and trucks.
Toyota said faulty gas pedals and floor mats, not electronics, are the cause. It is fixing millions of vehicles to correct those problems.
It was not immediately known whether the Middletown crash was from the same problem associated with the recall.
