I just saw this reported on Yahoo! News and get this comment that some idiot posted: "Why when the big 3 are struggling does this problem happen. Hmmmm can you say conspiracy." OIC, Detroit has caused Toyota to have problems with its cars. Right.

From what I've heard people have tried, and since the transmission is electronic it won't let it shift out of gear because it senses the throttle is wide open. Just what I've heard.

there was one in our area yesterday that got stuck at 160 km/h the cops had to chase him down and yell at him to press on the brakes as hard as he could and pull the e-brake.

i personal dont believe the story , there not a long enough road in canada to get a prius up too 160

That is exactly the case. The car is too smart for it's own good.

Thanks for the heads up. This is the first I have heard of the 2nd generation Pruis having a problem, all problems have been related to the 3rd generation.

awaits recall notice in the mail

I'm glad my neon is too stupid to try to fully accelerate itself.

^^^agreed.

I prefer cables to electronics. There are some other things about the car I don't like, on a programming level.

unfortunately, yeah, there's not really any way for them to shut the car off easily because cars today are that smart.....

Thank GOD that mopar hasn't followed the same growth...at least their shit can be shutoff anytime :)

Not just Toyota though. Most (Not all) manufacturers are switching to all electronic. That way when something breaks noone knows how to work on it, and it costs a grand to buy the part to fix it.

30 miles of acceleration and he was doing just over 90 ouch

It's all torque with no HP. It has around 95hp on the gas engine and a 40?hp electric motor.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. I would think that companies would want to use a cable just for the cost aspect of it, but I guess the residual monies is greater than the initial cost of the parts.

I found out that electronic throttles are a new requirment for emissions. All cars must have E-throttles as of 2008? IIRC.

The Caliber has one. Not a fan, but it hasn't done anything this bad...yet

insert conspiracy theory The government cause all of Toyota's problems.

The Caliber one isn't too bad. Apparentlly sometimes it lags a little, but I've heard there is a "recalibration" for it that the owner can do.

Just heard on the radio that before this happened the guy came in trying to get warranty work done because he got a recall notice in the mail, and the dealership told him that his car isn't part of the recall.

Hmmm.....I think Ill stick to my older CABLE operated car.

A friend of mine came up with a good point the other day about cars with electronic throttles and transmissions. It should be required by law that they be equipped with a master cut off switch. Big industrial equipment has them so should these cars.

Im not saying they have to be a BIG red button sticking out of your dash. Im sure they can make it look "pretty" and what not, but they should still have them.

Im glad that most of these problems are happening on open roads and not in front of, oh I dont know, lets say an elementary school around 2:30-3:00 PM?

well i work for gm and we have a recall on all the vibes, the problem is there "fix" is by putting a shim in the accellerater pedal... putting more tension on the spring to pic up the accelerater pedal... sorry to say that the accelerater pedal is not the problem, it is something to do with the programning in the toyota ecu.... not the pedal....

i have not hurd of any vibes with this problem but lets face it the only thing different from a vibe and a matrix is the bumpers...

Just make it so the key completely shuts everything down when you turn it off.

Part of the issue is some of these cars don't have keys. They have smart fobs and when you are in the car you can push the start button and it starts the car.

I learned something today, at 50mph you can shift the car into neutral.

I don't know about at wide open at 90mph :/

Well, guess you have to try it. If you get pulled over, tell them it was UA.

Smart fob? If i had that happen to me and the car wouldn't shift into neutral I would throw the fob out the window hoping the car would shut off.

But it won't.

I've started the car, forgot something in the house, took the fob inside with me (as my house key is on it) and it would stay running the entire time. The house is probably 75 feet from where I park the car.
