So I expect a pretty good amount of power out of the R/T.... Better be over 250 atleast. The R/T Charger and R/T Challenger have set the bar pretty high. It’s just trying to go back to where that name really means something.”

Good info, but it lacks the qualifying criteria to be in the club. To be in the Scat Pack, the car had to be able to run the 1/4 mile in 14 seconds or faster.gtxtreme19 wrote:http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/scat-pack.html
Here I always thought it was just a decal.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

no, you're a narrow minded old man who can't get past his fantasy cars. the new dart is right on par with the initial release of the dart in 1960. you gotta cut all auto manufacturers some slack with the limitations that are put on them. i can only imagine what you were like in the late 70's.theColonel wrote:Hudson_Neon wrote:lol, clearly the person who made that one doesn't like to compare first year runs and only knows of the dart's performance years

C'mon people, let's be civil. The 1GN Valiant/Dart was/is great (we got the original Barracuda and Duster/Demon from that platform, along with all of the other trim levels and packages). The 2GN Dart is great as well since it is a modern vehicle. My only quibble is that Chrysler Group didn't badge it Neon but I can understand why (DCX stomped that nameplate into the mud ).

Yep, good ol' Dr. Z hated that car. Oh well, he can go suck a bratwurst. It's not like anybody associated with Chrysler ever has to talk to him again.Midnight_Rider wrote:My only quibble is that Chrysler Group didn't badge it Neon but I can understand why (DCX stomped that nameplate into the mud ).

DCX's Caliber killed Chrysler's chances to be a "player" in the small car market ... nobody wins except Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, etc.Midnight_Rider wrote:True. And DCX's Caliber never did replace the Neon so we get the last laugh.

It was so far off the mark that I wonder to this day if it was in fact their intent to "replace" the Neon with the Caliber. From what I read and what I remember, they're mentality regarding the transition from the Neon to the Caliber was: "People only buy small cars because they can't afford big ones. So, we need to make a small car as big as possible." Naturally, that mentality reeks of Mercedes. Apparently the idea of someone buying a small car out of preference as opposed to necessity was a foreign concept, no pun intended.Midnight_Rider wrote:True. Oh well, onward with the Dart! I saw a white Limited up close last night. There were 4 adults in it and they didn't look crammed at all. I'm not a fan of white on any car, but this car had a real clean look to it. I like it.

You're right on the money. Europeans prefer hatchbacks so I think that DCX figured that Americans would warm up to them as well. The only successful hatchback in this country (that I can think of) was the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon. I know that there were others (Chevy Vega, Chevy Chevette, the GM N-O-V-A (Chevy Nova, Olds Omega, Pontiac Ventura, Buick Apollo), Ford Pinto/Mustang II, AMC Gremlin, Plymouth Sundance/Dodge Shadow, etc.) but they weren't as popular or as fondly remembered in my opinion.jonnymopar wrote:..."People only buy small cars because they can't afford big ones. The Dart makes me wish that I were in the market for a new car. I do feel guilty even thinking about a car other than a Neon though.

Mustang II... ewww.
Regarding hatchbacks, I'd say, at least from what I've seen in my life, the Golf/Rabbit was and is still very popular here, so the Europeans at least got that right. For me, I equate owning my VW to earning my college degree: it was ok at the time and I learned alot, but I'm thankful I never need to go through the expense and effort of it again.

IIRC, the Eurpoean Chrysler Horizon made it to market before the Golf (if not before, pretty darned close). I also remember KTP (Kokomo Transmission) testing Chrysler automatics that VW offered in Rabbits. Of course, some of the early Omni/Horizons had VW engines.[/off-topic]jonnymopar wrote:Regarding hatchbacks, I'd say, at least from what I've seen in my life, the Golf/Rabbit was and is still very popular here, so the Europeans at least got that right.

Well space is more of an issue here. My brother has a Ford F150 heavy duty dual cab and he can never fit in just one parking spot. The whole infrastructure is based on smaller cars, especially in a city it can be impossible to move around in what you would call a mid-size sedan.jonnymopar wrote:Regarding hatchbacks, I'd say, at least from what I've seen in my life, the Golf/Rabbit was and is still very popular here, so the Europeans at least got that right.
FYI: the neon is considered a mid-size sedan here
