How To: Cam Position Sensor replacement

How hard is this, and is it a dealer only part? I'm throwing a P0340 code.

Not bad at all. Pretty easy. Just follow the directions in the Chiltons or Haynes manual and shouldn't have a problem.

should be fairly easy, its in a relatively easy to reach location. You just gonna throw a new one in or do u plan to diagnose any further?

Well that's the thing... after searching the .org and here, I saw a lot of people complaining about the code, but nobody followingup with results (was it the wiring, was it the sensor, was it PCM malfunction?).

This P0340 code seems to be quite common in both 1Gn and 2Gn., that much at least I can tell.

There are 4 bolts on the driver side of the head on where the CPS is. I believe they are 10mm. Unplug the sensor, unscrew the 4 bolts. Take out the sensor. Make sure the sensor magnet are lined up in the appropriate holes. Place the new sensor back into its position. Screw in the 4 bolts to the torque listed in the Chiltons/Hayunes manual. Unplug the battery for 30 mins or so. Reconnect the battery. Pull the codes from the ECU with the three turn trick and ensure that your ECU was reset. Fire up the engine, check your idle. Fix accordingly.

MSRP on the sensor is almost $100 from the dealer....
And I recomend a 8mm 1/4 inch socket on a swivel and extension to help get the bolts out since you have to work around the metal heater tubes....

I paid $29.00 at AutoZone so the $tealership can kiss my a$$ lol It works perfectly, and now I have no engine codes. The engine seems to idle better, too. AutoZone FTW!

In the end it was pretty easy:

1. Remove battery cables.

2. Remove battery.

3. Bend open the two rubber-coated brakets that hold the wire bundle (this is the wire bundle that goes under the plastic injector cover).

4. Detach the PCV tube from the valvecover; set aside.

5. Move the wire bundle over the top of the PCV vent. You should be able to wriggle it over.

6. Unbolt the steel heater hoses from the head, right next to the CPS.

7. With an 8mm universal jointed socket (not a U-joint connected to an 8mm short, that might be too long), remove the four bolts that hold the CPS. For the lower right one, you may need to snake the extension and socket in between the two rubber heater hoses.

8. Pull up the CPS from the area.

9. Detach the sensor wire connector. Be careful, as it may be brittle and can break.

10. Wipe the exposed area on the side of the head with a paper towel.

11. Attach the new CPS to the harness connector. If you broke the hook n' latch off in the removal, gently bend the two outermost prongs on the new CPS, so that when it slides into the connector, it has some tension on the contacts and holds in place.

12. Bolt the CPS back in.

13. Bolt the steel heater lines back to the head.

14. Move the wire bundle back into the rubberized brackets and bend them closed.

15. Replace the PCV hose on the vent.

16. Replace battery and battery cables.

You're done!

Was real easy, $25 for me at Autozone.... I had one extra step, removing the broken bolt from the block and going to the junkyard to get a new one. Opps. Car still idles like crap though.

can I get a part number maybe off you guys. Not saying that I need it...yet, but have a feeling it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just know that the vehicle ID is for a 2000 Neon 2.0. I'm pretty sure they are all the same, but change the vehicle to your specific year to be sure.

Ok. My car threw the same code. And my dad just replaced it. He wanted me to thank you for the step by step instructions they were perfect. Didn't take too long at all. He said the only thing he'd add would be like a telescopic(sp?) magnet, incase you drop a bolt or w/e, lol. But other than that it was on the money. My car is up and running again and works a whole lot better than before. Thanks again!

ok i just did this it wasnt to bad.... but i ran in to a huge problem!!! im guessing either the gasket or i didnt tightn it enough and my oil drained out all over.. i hav to wait til the morning to take the battery out and see if i can fix it..

I didn't know the cam sensor and the radiator fan motor were the same.

ok i took it apart again today and i found the problem! the gasket some how wasnt in all the way and it melted! lol so i just took the old one and put it on and now its all good

I am about halfway done (need to pick up sensor) on doing a CPS + pigtail on my 99.

I found the easiest thing to do was to unplug the main wiring harness from the TB, Injectors, IM, etc. This let me move the harness to get to the last two bolts with the swivel head.

I just got done taking the old CPS off and putting a new one in... however, the bolts don't seem to be screwing in properly. With each try they just get worse. Any idea what's going on? They're the exact same bolts.

EDIT: Turns out I crossthreaded them. Had to ease them in over time, and finally got it done. Best advice I can give is to walk away and relax for a bit with a pop or beer, then come back in an hour.

And for those who are having hard starts (10-15 cranks to start the engine) and having your car throw this code, yes it fixes it

. Now to work on changing the oil... shop overtorqued the bolt on.

Heres the Napa part #CSS702. This even comes with a new replacement harness. I get a small discount from work but it only cost me 18 bucks. I had a hairline crack in my original unit causing a small oil leak through the plug.
