Hmm ok. I just know the R/T piping is bigger than regular piping which is why we have to run an adapter to fit an R/T rear section on a non R/T

Which is totally weird, because SRT rear sections DEF bolt right up.

SRT/SXT are the same size.. they both neck down. Only The R/T is the same size throughout. Yeah, it's weird.

It really depends on what your perception of loud, or/and annoying is.

With the R/T dual outlets, you are either going to pay through the nose for bolt on parts, or build an axle back from a Camaro muffler, which will work just as well, and prolly be cheaper.

A 2.5 system is going to be louder due to the extra size alone. Especially if the muffler you choose has dual 2.5 outlets that match your R/T rear fascia. The dual outlets alone, will be louder than a single outlet.

Example:
The SRT rear section is noticeably quieter with one side plugged.

I have a walker "Quiet Flow" V6 Camaro muffler on mine, and It can be a bit loud even with a resonator in the midpipe. But that is mainly above 3500 rpm at full throttle. For normal cruising it is pretty decent. It does begin to drone a little at 70 mph, and above. It is more annoying when I am tired, but anytime else, it doesn't bother me.

That is just a side effect of chronological accumulation.

So ur saying I should stick with my 2.25 exhaust and just get a new muffler? I was thinking about changing it to single outlet. I have a good 2.25 flowmaster muffler that's a single inlet my bud gave me when he upgraded his spec V exhaust but I got a feeling it's gona be loud. I just don't want the fart can sound.

I've got a rice cannon with 2.5" piping (although it's actually like 2.35-ish) and it doesn't have that typical can sound. It's deep and smooth, not raspy or gnarly or any of that ghey stuff. The piping is stainless and I got it on eBay for $200 and it came with an oval muffler. A $20 eBay can and $50 work of welding and it looks clean, sounds great, and maybe with supporting mods it'll give true performance. It's only loud if I floor it, and even then I hear the engine over it.

Yeah, a Flowmaster will be loud.

A replacement new R/T muffler will be expensive. MSRP $295.00

You could always tweek a 1gn DOHC muffler to fit tho, if you want a one side exit. They have two outlets, just the same side (passenger). They are supposed to flow well. allegedly the hanger brackets just need re bent a little. I can't truly say, just from what I have read. MSRP $162.00

a flowmaster will definitely be loud.....but youll never get a fart can sound out of a flowmaster.....it's just not possible because it's a chambered muffler as opposed to a straight through muffler.

I've had the flowmaster 80 series camaro muffler on my neon with 2.5" piping..........definitely loud, and definitely drones a lot.....not what i want anymore.

I'm most likely to get a flowmaster 70 series muffler as it's one of the quietest flowmasters you can get, and have a single tip on it.....if a tip at all...I may go for a stock type turndown...

Not as much as you would think...

Borla I got for 440 new, flowmaster 80 setup only 200, side exit 80bucks, etc...

The 70 series is gonna run me around 175 for the muffler...

Morroso's in the midpipe costed me about 150.

A 70 is still loud as hell. I have a single exit one that I mocked up before I went with what I now have. It wasn't bad on the Jeep, it was loud, but on the neon, it was very loud.

I guess the flow/engine type have a huge influence. On the neon, it wasn't much quieter than a straight pipe. So needless to say I went no further in my quest to stuff that thing under there.

Seeing as they are designed for big block V8's, they are huge. There is just enough room under the trunk to fit the muffler, and not much for plumbing. Being that they are designed for massive amounts of flow, could be why it is so loud on a 4 cylinder. 400 to 500 CID is a good difference from 122 CID

ok then............................looks like i wont be going with a 70....thanks for the heads up OD...

well this just screws me now...........I gotta find an exhaust and SOON...

Actually, i still have yet to see what Cheri sounds like on the inside with all the new sound deadening...If she's fairly quiet without a muffler, I'll just run a straight pipe out the driver side cutout in the bumper...

unfortunately, i'll never buy a magnaflow, i cant stand their sound (no offense...its just not my taste)...i dont like a straight through muffler......chambered mufflers sound much better to me

I would stick with the 2.25". You would need an adapter to go from the cat back, and unless you are doing some serious mods, 2.25 will be just fine on your SXT. The "05's are very picky about mods anyways, so most things that you do to make use of a 2.5" exhaust might give you a CEL.

Unless you do an SRT swap, I would just go with a good axle back muffler, and call it a day, if you want a bit more sound. If you decide to go with a cam, etc, and take your chances with the CEL, then worry about the exhaust afterwards.

A stock SRT is able to shove 230 hp out of the 2.00" neck down by the axle, so I think a near stock 2.0 can manage a little better as far as potential backpressure.

Remember, while a turbo may force air into the engine, it isn't forcing air out. Maybe only for those brief moments when the BOV is actuated, and it isn't making power at those times.

yeah I'm not gonna do too too much. got a CAI and I'll probably upgrade the header, throw on a muffler and probably an under drive pulley. I'd like more of a mid performance ride with decent fuel efficiency.
