How-To: Clutch Pedal Pivot upgrade

Post by trinity_rush2001 » Tue Jul 07, 2009 5:11 pm

First and for most I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU MAY CAUSE TO YOURSELF OR VEHICLE attempt at your own risk

so recently the little black plastic retaining clip that hold the clutch pivot piece 2 the clutch pedal rod broke on me, this of course prevented me from engaging the clutch fully 2 go into gears. (pictures of piece)

so anyways i went and got a new clutch master cylinder and replaced it, it worked for a little bit and then the little platic clip broke again. I did some research and seems 2 be a common problem so i went through all the posted probable causes

i recomend checking these as well if ur having the same problem

-overfiled resivor
-improper pedal adjustment
-bad clutch master cylinder
-bad slave

none of these seemed to be my problem so i decided 2 improve the factory setup. (note you can purchase an aluminum replacement piece with rubber bushing from rage tek)

Here is what i did-

materials needed (got all these from lowes)
-brass flange bearing (3/8 x 1/2 x 5/8 x 1")
-Factory Clutch Pivot Piece
-Hacksaw (to cut the excess of the flange off)
-Dremel (the bore out some of the flange)
-E-clip (sry i forget the size of the eclip)

Process

Take your flange and press it in the plastic pivot piece (if u got the same one i listed it should fit snug)

Take a pen marker or some sort of marking tool and mark your flange so you can cut the excess off

Take your Dremel with a cylinder grinding stone (one that fits inside the flange) and dremel out some of the flange untill the inner diameter is 7/16 or .437 (i recomend dremeling a little smaller and then test fitting its just incase there is a slight difference)

once you get the diameter you want/need go ahead and squeeze urself under the dash and install your newly fabricated piece, slide the piece one (i putthe lip facing out toward the left) and screw it in slightly. then pull the clutch pedal all the way up (was told this was factory) or adjust to personal preferance.

tighten screw and then install the eclip and then go test it out

like i said i did this because my plastice retaining clip kept breaking and none of the recommended problems were causing it.

there are no performance gains from this it just give more of an ensurance that it wont break one day while ur driving. picture below

Will keep this in mind, should it become necessary.
With the way things could go, we may need to fab our own parts to keep 'em going.

It would have helped if you had your model year in your sig. You don't have that piece! Cable = 2000. This is for '01 up!

i read somewhere, modern said they were going to re-release those metal pivot pieces but i dunno when, but for now no they dont sell them.
They stopped selling them because apparently some people were installing them improperly and were breaking shit.

I doubt they could be installed improperly. It would be nearly impossible to install them upside down.

I can't tell from the pic, but the centerline of the pivot hole on the oem piece is not the in the same plane as the pushrod. It is offset slightly.

If the ones modern were selling were in the same plane, it could explain why the pushrods were bending/breaking. Or the brass bushing was binding on the pivot pin.

I was observing mine the other day, when the pedal is pushed, the oem unit actually bends. Now my pressure plate is a bit stiffer than stock also. I fear I am going to need a metal one eventually. If it comes down to making one, it will have a needle bearing pressed in, instead of a bronze bushing. Finding a bearing might be the fun part.
