Gauges say "Door" and "Fuse"

Post by chipdogg » Sun Jul 11, 2010 10:31 pm

2000 Plymouth Neon atx, base/SE. Was looking it over to figure out if it needed a trans or not as previous owner said. Dome light doesn't come on with doors open, and I opened/closed all 4 doors and didn't fix anything. Haven't had a chance to look into it but figured someone would know what it is.

Thanks.

No, like I said I haven't even looked at it yet. Just noticed it kept saying "Fuse" and "Door" above odometer and was dinging at me from time to time. I only looked at the car for a little bit after getting one of my R/T coupes running.

Previous owner said the trans was junk cuz it wouldn't always move, but it was about 3 quarts low, now it drives great after adding some fluid. Hopefully that's all it needed. Gonna look at it some more tomorrow.

Just never had a 2nd gen (now I have 2 in driveway) and all the fancy shit on the dash is new to me. 1st gens don't even tell you if the cruise is on or not, you gotta let off the gas and see if it slows down

The dome light is sort of an in-line fuse. If it goes out, the cluster generally flashes fuse until it is changed. If the dome light still works, there are some other things but it is sounding like a new bulb should fix the problem.

Wow it is that easy, guess I'll toss in a new bulb tonight. How fancy is that.

If you have a 2000, the door jam switch could be bad in one of the doors. 2001 to 2005, the door latch might be bad. The switch to ground is in the latch. Or you have a bad instrument cluster. IIRC, the timer for the dome is in the cluster.

I've seen the same problem on a few different neons now. Check Fuse #4 in the interior fuse panel. For whatever reason, the terminals for that fuse were somewhat loose on two cars i've personally seen. If that fuse is still okay, try wiggling it around and see what happens. I ended up bending the little terminals out that hold the fuse in place, problem solved.

Good info.

all your fuses should take a fair amount of effort to pull them out. Being too loose can cause the slide contact to heat up, and become even more loose. (If the circuit has enough amp draw) IDK if anyone has had a fuse block melt tho.

So does the FUSE notification go away after replacing the dome light bulb? I think I have one left at my apartment but I do know that the drivers door doesn't quite lock correctly so my problem might be several problems in one. So I am thinking of starting with the dome light bulb first.

The dome light is the easiest first step. The filament completes the circuit. if it burns out, the circuit is open, setting the "fuse" warning in the cluster. If you have the "door" warning it could be in the door switch.

Nope. Just the FUSE warning light. So I should be good to go with the Dome light bulb.

I don't recall getting that same warning last time I had a bulb burn out in my 2002 Base a few years ago.

Thanks again for the information. One issue down several to go.

You can use a 194 turn signal bulb to test it, if you do not have the specific bulb handy. ;)

I had one left over from the last time I changed a bulb in the last Neon. Worked like a charm and dang it is bright.

Bumping this up for additional info.

Being it is making a witches tit seem warm around here, I noticed my dome didn't come on, and when I shut the door, I got alternating FUSE, and the regular odometer display. So I opened and closed the door a few times, the dome light began working and the FUSE message went away.

So the '01 up door latches, or the '00 door pins could also cause the FUSE message, even if the dome light and wiring are good.

Edit: I also have an LED 194 replacement in there, so I know there was still a ground there, as it was faintly glowing like normal. This was 100% the door switch.

I know I’m replying to another old thread, but my 2000 Plymouth also has the FUSE message on the cluster after startup. But it’s kinda tricky because a previous owner removed the door pins so naturally the done light doesn’t work. There’s no truck light in the car anymore either. No dome light does kinda suck, but I don’t want to mess with reinstalling all the door pins & such.

Is there actually a bulb, that has an intact filament in the dome light socket?

Not knowing how they removed the pins, if there is a snipped wire, possibly partially grounding out, it's tough to say if that is the cause...
