Ground wire from aftermarket HU. Ok to connect?

well i installed my own stereo yesterday, took me 3 damn hours and supposed to be a 30 minute job lol. BIG accomplishment for an audio newb like me. well to my question. instead of connecting the ground wire to solid metal i cut off the U-end and connected it to the stock black ground wire. is that ok or will i have to go back and change it? i installed it two days ago and its been working fine for now.
