Anyone have really good hookups?

I'm looking to get a new headunit for my cobalt because I'm SICK of this damn panasonic one.... The whole "controlling ipod through headunit" thing blows on this like most other headunits.

I'm looking for something double din, has full speed ipod control, and really that's all i care about. If the screen detaches, bad ass, but not necessary. I know only a few double dins actually have detachable faces. (JVC being one of them.) Preferred brands being Apline, Pionner, JVC, or Clarion. Pretty much in that order.

I was looking at the alpine IVA-W505, but I don't have $1,000 to spend, so I was wondering if anyone has some connections, or can get stuff at store cost? Or hell, if anyone has any receiver suggestions then let me know. I'd prefer to spend under $500 if possible. I don't give two shits about DVD or NAV (who the hell needs a DVD player in the car, and i alread have a damn GPS), just full ipod control.

Why do you car about double din if you don't care about dvd/nav? Alpine head units are freaking amazing for ipods, get a CDA-9885 or 9887 and you're golden. I have a cde 9881 and it's awesome.

yup, stock stereo is double din, and having a single din with a little cubby hole looks like shit. i'm sick of all the cheap plastic around my stereo.

because i don't know what is currently in my car, working. and i think i would know what is required to put in a stereo of the car that i own. Reasons like this is why I don't let people install stereo crap in any car I've ever owned. They just assume.

but if you REALLY want to challenge what i'm saying:
http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/showthread.php?t=96094

:)

Edit myself: I don't have, nor will I ever get, onstar

it looks that Onstar wasnt standard or an option in 05-06 hence the XSVI harness. they are both LAN-Bus interfaces.

the 70-2103 will work IF you do the rewireing like whats stated on that site you linked to. the 70-2103 is originally a saturn 05+ harness which is why you have to relocate the speaker lines. he didnt mention the ACC line also. if you DONT want to rewire and do it RIGHT you need the XSVI-2103. my info is straight from metra man and years of install experience ive done a few of these cars before

with a car that has a clean slate like what you got i would do it clean and do it right

"do it clean and do it right"

All I had to do, was plug a harness in, snip 1 factory wire, and run to a switched source. I think that's about as clean as it gets. Every speaker in the car works, I still have my door chimes, and the radio stays on for 10 minutes when the car is shut off, just like factory. I didn't have to re-wire anything.

I think your install experience is flawed there buddy. There is more than one way to do something right. Unless you've worked on a cobalt yourself, I'd say you have little room to talk.

QUOTE from the site your linked.
OPS's Linked Site wrote: 5.) What Harness do i need for my 05-06?

Metra = 70-2103
Warning the Scosche, AI and Bluewave harnesses are for Saturn's... the plug will physiclly work but you will need to repin the speaker wires along with cut or remove the 2 red "jumpers". I dont recommend them but i have the part numbers listed.
you colbalt buddie apperently agreed with me before this issue even came up... balance and fade your speakers and do a phase test... i bet you your going to have problems with phase. without even looking in the book i bet you the 70-2103 is light blue. and i have done some cobalts which is why im telling you the XSVI is the RIGHT harness, GM has about 4 different harnesses that will plug into your factory one but it dosent mean its the right one

by Mr Josh Zombie
Yea, if you buy the Scosche, AI, or bluewave brand harnesses. I bought the Metra.

I have messed with the balance and fade. Right goes right, left goes left, ect ect. I can safely say though, I have no idea what a phase test is.

the haness hes thinking of are the saturn harness. they look identical to yours color and all thats why hes saying to repin them. they dont make a G6 harness which is whats in your car, which is what the 70-2103 is.

phas is the + - on the radio are connected to the + - of the speakers correctly. if you wire a speaker backwards you loose some low end. however now that i look at this G6 harness and the shematic of your car it looks like it might be fine. you will never know tho unless you had an actual phase tester that connects to the line

im telling you tho thres a reason why metra is saying to use the XSVI version of the 70-2103 and not the actual 70-2103

if i had a 07+ then yes, you'd be right. you'd be 100% right

but I don't. I own an 06. That's the reason why I can get away with using the harness I have in the car, without the need to re-pin anything. This is actually why I bought an '06, so I wouldn't have to worry about loosing factory features.

Would you like a video of the car working just fine and dandy?

Also, the only reason i even so much as had to snip a factory wire is due to the fact I have the pioneer system in the car. I had to disable the factory amp, otherwise the speakers don't work.

im not saying its not going to work, you can get anything to work, i got a toyota radio to work in a chevy, that dosent mean that its right. and the XSVI-2103 is for the 05-06 the 07+is the GMOS-LAN-03/04. running a line for switched is considered a last resort among the MECP community, if you have the harness that is made for the car you use it unless its some emergency which is usually the case. but if a had that car man i would want it 100% clean is all

by Mr Josh Zombie
lets see, $10 > $80, and there isn't a damn bit of difference between having to run one little line, and having an $80 that makes it work.

Hell, in my cavalier I used to own, you HAD to run a switch. there was no way around it. What does the MECP say about that?

Posted: Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:39 am
by Craz1000
LOL thats teh emergency usually the price... the costomer dosent have the money which is understandable.

the XSVI's are a little over year old. the cavilier harness your taling about im sure is the 70-2001 which actually came with a line to run. now in cars that you have to run a line which were the ClassII cars the 70-2001 will work and you used that harness if thats all you had. but the right harness to use was the databus harness wich was like $100+. again price is 90% of the time an issue so we were forced to use the 70-2001 harness with the red line it came with. that same harness now is $40, which isnt as much as an issue so we use it every time

Well this was a fun lesson now wasn't it. We both learned a thing or two.

GM-ClassII is gone now and the Gm-LAN is what replaced it which is whats in your colbalt. all dodge/chrysler have a system thats simillar that the Gm-LAN is based on called the CAN-Bus. if i remember Mercedies-Benz developed it.

the good thing about your car tho is the LAN-Bus itself. it only takes about 45min for a good installer to throw in an alarm. all you need are 3 connections because the LAN bus will communicate directly to an alarm that has an interface for it ie DEI. otherwise you would have to do it 'old school' and it would take hours on end

EDIT: the H2 and the Corvette still use the Gm-ClassII system

CAN-BUS is outdated... Chryslers are all on CAN-BUS II now... get with the times man, lol

I'm not trying to be a jerk but if he had to tell you what a phase test was then I think I would listen to him way before I would ever trust that what your saying is correct.

difference is though, i don't claim, nor have i ever, to be an electrics specialist. i do know how to install stereos in a car i own, or have owned, because i research, ask questions, and find out everything before i do so. i don't take my answers out of a book. i take the answers from the actual owners of the vehicles.

i know + needs to go to + and - needs to go to -. That doesn't mean i have to know what a phase test is. :)

and no offense taken.

hes right, phase should be fine, i checked the wiring. the thing that bugged me is that the forums was telling him one thing and metra was really strong in suggesting that harness, im sure they have a good reason and i know alot of it has to do with the GM-LAN-Bus using RAS to turn on the radio and some other things; but its not REQUIRED to have the radio run.

its systems like this with LAN-Bus, and dodge now using the CAN-Bus system that really bothers me and has completely turned me off to some auto manufacturers.. that and the hideous cars they are coming out with now and flat interiors with no curvature to them.. its so boring to sit inside of a box. i am really looking into a VW just because CAN-Bus is the lesser of the 2 evils and VW is making the only cars nowadays that actually have a style that i find appealing like i did with the neons back in '95
