Post by Bluerocketsneeks » Wed Sep 17, 2008 11:05 pm

i fould a guy parting out a 98 grand cherokee limited with the infinity gold sound system... but my speaker set up had 6X9 in the back and the 98 jeep has 6X5... i think the switched to 6X9 the new 99 jeep but will it still work?

well if its 6x5 then it wont fit.. but besides that as far as 'plug and play' ... dont know.. probably not.. each car manufacturer seems to make their own plugs.. youd probably have to splice the wires

Well its all mopar... just an earlier line... I have the same headunit as the 99 and up and it will work with the 99 and up speaker set up... but I want to make sure it will work with the 1998 model.. I know nothing of installing speaker.. But I can make the brakets work with the 6x9 backets.. I want to make sure there's no hiss or echo or any crazy audio problem I wouldn't expect

Anyone else have any ideas?

eh.. lets be clear.. youre talking about putting speakers into your JEEP? and not taking speakers from a jeep and putting them into your NEON?

forgot which forum we were on..

The Infinity system of that year uses an external amp to power the speakers. While you might be able to use the speakers, they won't sound any better without the amp.

If you can get it, grab the amp and wiring as well. Might as well get the speaker connectors too so if they are different than the ones in your Neon you can solder them onto your harness.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

The amp.. Meaning the unit under the back seat correct?

The speakers are ran through that?

I'm not sure where the amp is located on that year Jeep to be honest. My parts catalog doesn't show it's location.

But yes, the signal for the speakers comes from the head unit, to the amp, and then to the speakers.

As a side note, did you hear the radio play in the donor Jeep? Did the speakers sound OK? I have had more and more customers asking about replacement speakers in '97-'01 Jeeps lately. Keep in mind that those speakers are 11 years old now

Well my dad had a 1996 which is pretty much the same... and it sound incrediable... this speaker set up only came on the top of line model (5.9 limited) so im not sure if they infinity gold speakers have the problems... my dads didn't.. And this jeep only had 14,000 miles on it so that's why I thought it would best to look into

The system does sound great. It was one of the better OEM speaker systems of the day. Keep in mind that while the mileage is low, time is still an enemy of speakers. Hot and cold cycles still deteriorates the cone.

I'm no expert at all when it comes to stereo work. I was very happy when I upgraded my speakers to the Kicker system that Mopar sells. Imaging and range increased greatly, plug and play (depending on the year of you car of course) and not horribly expensive

if that system sounds good to you and you can get it fairly cheap go for it. if you want to build a system that will sound 10x better than your neon, even at low volumes, get ready to spend cash (and a lot of it).

i guess it depends on your speaker tastes for pricing. based on those prices i would buy aftermarket instead.

Alpine type-r comps $149 shipped

Alpine type-r 6x9 $98 shipped

BUT.... then you would have to buy a 4 channel amp if you really wanted to drive them :)
