I searched around and saw something about an adapter to be able to install a newer, two plug Neon radio into an older, single plug Neon? Are these actually around?

Yes you can get them from the dealer. I cant remember the part number but I have one.

Actually I was searching for the partnumber for someone else and found it should be

8220 7541
WIRING KIT, Audio System Adapter, Used when installing
radios with 22 way connector radios to vehicles with 7 way
radio connectors
