A/C?

Post by 2005.Neon.SXT » Wed Aug 11, 2010 10:42 am

I didn't know where to put this, but I figured maybe it had something to do with the electrical system? Alternator?... I honestly don't know... I apologize before hand, Mods :)

Anyway, so I am currently in Colorado Springs. Traveled here [with the Neon] from NC. I noticed this problem before with my A/C, but when the car is first started for the day, the A/C works flawlessly. Blows cold and I swear I have to wear gloves sometimes. But after cruising for around an hour or so, it dies out... it still blows cold air, but just not as hard. And when I turn the fan up on the A/C side, there's this weird hissing/humming behind the HVAC area. Just wondering if anyone knows of this problem, and if so.. is there a way to fix it?

Thanks.

Possibly it is freezing up, restricting air flow though the evaporator. Not sure how they control the temp on these, but the older systems needed the expansion valve replaced. (Evac system/fix/Evac system/recharge.)

yup like he said, its freezing up. What i will do occassionally to keep the thing from freezing up is to turn it on vent for 10 min, then turn the a/c back on. You'll notice even with the a/c off it will still blow cold from all the ice buildup

Have you checked to see if the Plenum is draining condensate...aka water? Sometimes the drain gets clogged with debris..leaves and stuff. After the a/c has been on a while, raise the hood and check the drain to see if water is coming out. The drain is toward the bottom of the firewall on the passenger side, a lil hose that points toward the ground. Just a thought.

same ting happens on my 05 and the drain is clear. usually only happens on the really hot days. give it some time w/o running and it will go back to normal.
