Does anybody know, where the mileage is stored ?
I am thinking about tearing a german cluster apart and combine it with the us tachometer and wont loose the original mileage.

Stored in the printed circuit board on the back.

If the German cluster does not have a tach, I don't think it is swappable. From what I've read on this site, only tach to tach, or non tach to non tach boards are swappable. Must be the same cluster type.

don't forget - one is miles and one is km...

^ That's what I came in to say....aren't the measurements different?

If he puts the km/hr board into the mph cluster, he will just need a km/hr overlay for the speedometer.
But yes the speedometer will still be going to the km/hr positions.

i would just change the overlay and don't touch the internals.
just look if they show both the same max. speed!

If the mileage is stored in the cluster itself, what do you do if you want to swap a tach cluster in place of a non-tach cluster and want to keep the correct mileage?

try swapping the board over. if it doesn't work... there's nothing you can do. apparently you can't swap a board from a 120 mph speedo to a 140 mph one.

Can't the dealer just flash it or something? Wouldn't they have made some kind of provision for people with faulty clusters that need one replaced with the same type

I believe they can flash the mileage into a NEW cluster, yes. And they MAY be able to put your higher mileage on a lower mileage cluster but not the other way around.

Key word there. They could do it with a used cluster, but finding a dealer that will, is another matter.
Allegedly, mileage is also stored in the PCM, but it is not transferable to the cluster.
The boards can only be swapped to like clusters. Tach to Tach, No tach to no tach.
As far as speedos go, it will work, but the speed will be off. The board will put the needle in the position that correlates with the scale it came from. An overlay will make it correct, but it would defeat the purpose of going to a higher rated speedo.

Do I need a specific year range? I've seen pages that suggest the 2000-2001, 2002, and 2003+ are different, but not whether they are incompatible or just a different look.

A 99 bux-cluster seemed to be working on my 05 SXT, so I think it should work. I connected it only a moment to see, if it will be working and to read the mileage, don“t installed it for longer.

Just to clear this up a bit...
The mileage in the cluster cannot be changed by a dealer. Only a radio repair facility that does repair work on clusters can do that, but you cannot take a cluster to them and have it changed. Against federal law and all that.
