Unknown Chimes

Post by th3magpi3 » Thu Dec 23, 2010 4:01 pm

Hey guys, maybe you can help me out with a problem Ive been having as my school mechanic has no idea. So recently my poor car has been going through some issues. I had some electrical problems with my parking lights and running tailights. The fuse kept blowing so we re wired the tails to 12v ignition from the fuse box. However now whenever I turn a corner, make a stop, or even when I'm just driving I get a chime. I first thought it was my e break being loose from drifting around in the snow hard one night but I tightened it and made sure it was not the e break setting it off by pulling it directly after my car chimed because after you pull the e break it makes a chime but if you pull it again within a couple of seconds it wont chime and it still chimed when I pulled it. Now I'm not sure if this chime is a common problem or if it is related to my electrical problems. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do any lights come on in the cluster when it chimes? Does it say "door" or "fuse" in the odometer area?

Nope. Nothing comes up on the gauge cluster, no seatbelt light. Nothing. Thats why im so stumped. What in the car can cause a chime that doesnt show on the gauge cluster.

Sometimes when I'm cruising along I'll hear the chime, no lights, nothing. I just ignore it. I've had it happen in all 3 cars.

its not like it happens once in a while though, it happens about 15+ times per drive...

Unless the way the lights were re wired, it somehow thinks a turn signal is left on. There are quite a few things that will make the cluster chime, figuring out which one is the culprit will be the fun part.

E-brake being on while driving will make it chime. And if the wire isn't hooked up it won't show up.

Mine sometimes chimes like this when I release the parking brake after ignition.

Mine never chimes if the parking brake is set or not.

Thanks for all the helpful responses guys. Figured out the problem. I topped off my baby with 2l of oil and the chimes stopped. Guess its time for an oil change and a new oil light bulb in my cluster...

Guess it's time to learn how to check the oil every so often too...
