No brake lights

Post by supercommuter » Mon Apr 11, 2011 3:41 pm

I had a slight fender bender last week where I bumped into another car and made a mess of the front of my car. I now have no brake lights. Any idea whay that could be? All of the other lights work, but when I press the brake pedal, no brake lights. I can't see how a front impact could affect the brake lights, especially when all the other lights work.

Any ideas? I've got the car all back together, just have to sort out these damn brake lights now. Thanks!

Have you checked the bulbs to make sure they didn't blow?

Yeah, the bulbs are good. Fuse is good.

The only thing I can think of is maybe a ground came loose? It happened as a result of the impact, because I noticed it before I began tearing it down.

Any other ideas?

May be silly but did you hit the brake switch and poss brake it off with your foot (the one mounted on the pedal assy)

Are both grounds still attached to the core support next to the headlamps?
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Yeah, I reattached the ground wire on the rad support next to the passenger side headlight. I don't think I re-used the same screw, but I don't think that should matter. It's definitely secure.

The one on the drivers side I didn't touch.

You may want to check the one you didn't touch. I've seen them come loose after accidents.

Do the taillights come on when you turn the headlights on, as in, are the bulbs getting power period?

Like Caraudioholic24 said, could be that the brake light switch came loose from it's mount.

I checked, and the brake light switch is intact and secure in its mount. I'll check it with a voltmeter when I get home from work.

Do you have speed control ?
Is the third brake light working ?

There is a seperated wire from the brake pedal switch to the third brake light, which is working independendly from the other brakelights. The other wire goes to the multifunctionswitch and as long as your rearturnlights are still working, the ground should be fine.
If your speed control (if equipped) is still working, you will have a strange problem

If the rear signals are working, the problem is before,or in the MFS, as the rear signals use the same wires/filaments.
