Alright, so I'd really like to upgrade just my interior speakers w/ some new ones. I plan on keeping the stock head unit and just sold my 10" sub b/c I'm over the *boom* *boom* *boom* lol

I just want an up-to-date system that will sound really good to the ear.

For what I've read, we have 6 3/4" Front Door speakers, 3.5" Tweeters in the Dash, and 6x9" Rear Decks...correct?

I'm not so much worried about the 3.5" tweeters, as nothing's wrong with them...but would love to upgrade my Rear & Fronts. I've always been a fan of Rockford Fosgate & Infinity (my buddy w/ a Jeep G.C just replaced his OEM Infinity's with brand new ones from Best Buy and they sound awesome). I want to say, let's keep it around $200 ($100/pair) - so no, I am not going to spend $300 on one pair of speakers...that's absurd. lol

I guess my real questions are:

1) What is the difference b/t a 2-way & 3-way speaker? Which is better? Do they both sound the same to a normal "untuned" ear or do you recommend one over the other?

2) For the Fronts - are they really 6 3/4" or really 6.5" but can fit 6 3/4"? or is it really 6 3/4" but also has mounting holes to fit a standard 6.5"?

3) Are Infinity or Rockford still considered "top of the line" car audio brands or are they now being replaced by Alpine or Kicker? Which would you recommend out of the 4 the most?

Not sure of the front door speaker size as i made some adapters to fit some hi-fi speakers in

6x9s in the rear deck is correct

im not sure of the size tweeters in the dash either but they dont seem to be a standard fit so finding an aftermarket bolt-on would be difficult


1) a 2 way speaker is a driver and a tweeter in the middle.
a 3 way has driver and 2 tweeters (i assume to cover 2 different ranges). a component system has a driver and a totally seperate tweeter.

2) For the Fronts - not 100% sure but i think 6.5"

3) I think all 4 are pretty highly regarded. I have RE 6x9s in mine and LOVE them

4) Never owned alpine so can't comment

Thanks mate for the fast response! I just found a guy on Craigslist that has like new Alpine Type-R 6x9's & accepted my offer of $50 cash (they're $200 brand new) - he only used them for 2 months. Also, with my eBay bucks I can get Alpine Type-R 6.5s delivered to my door for $93 w/ 2 year warranty.

My 10" sub was an Alpine Type-R and it was a fantastic subwoofer.

Do you think the top mounting will be no problem?

Front dash speakes are 3.5 or 3 and a quarter. Something like that. I know I replaced mine with 3.5's from Kicker.

i cant remember the space you have behind the stock speaker. its prolly best to check that first as if they are too deep the window could hit it.

the speakers i have fitted are like 3 inches deep so had to make some huge spacers, this can be tricky due to the shape of the factory speaker mounts but dosent take long with a dremel and some imagination.






If you are happy with alpine and its a good deal then go for it

everyone has different hearing and what someone thinks sounds crap someone else might think sounds good ... as long as you are happy with your system then that's all that matters

As far as the 2 and 3 channel I had a set of pioneers back in the day that were 3 channel ( which is you low driver and 2 tweeters one is a super tweeter for much higher .....highs) I had a friend who had pioneer 2 channel and to the untrained ear they sounded the same. But when I tuned my headunit and amped the speakers there was a very noticeable difference. If you keeping ur stock headunit it won't make a difference.

you will be happy with the alpine type-r speakers. the 6x9 have pretty good low output. if you can i highly suggest you get a 4 channel amp to drive them, it will be night and day different. imagine your sub running off hu power alone, then compare it to being amp'd. the same basic principle applies to your interior speakers.


that being said, forget about the dash speakers. reflecting sound off the windshield is about the worst ting you can do in a car, which already has lots of inherent problems due to cabin design. the stock dash and door speakers are wired together, so if you replace the door speakers disconnect the 1" in the dash (3.5" opening).

A lot of ppl put tweeters in the triangle piece in the doors, near the dash. A little more directional, I suppose. Putting tweeters in place of the dash speakers does improve the overall sound. It may not be the best, to the audio purists, but it is better than the oem speakers by a long shot. You will need to fab an adapter plate to use 1" tweeters in the dash tho. Some tin, snips and tracing the factory speakers worked very well for me.

Best high sounds come from " horns" my buddy has a set in his car and they are the best for highs

Well, new speakers have been ordered

I picked up 2 month old Alpine Type R 2-way 6 x 9 in perfect condition today for $50 off of a guy from Craigslist and just ordered brand new Alpine Type R 2-way 6.5" for $94.47. Each pair (6x9 & 6.5) retail around $179.99 ($360) at Best Buy, C-field, etc. so I'd say $150 for 4 speakers...

Good deal ........now get them installed!!

Oh, I'll do that myself lol I just need to wait for the 6.5's to deliver - no sense in upgrading the 6 x 9's w/o the fronts
